Yeah, people just like to tweek stuff for the sake of tweeking stuff I guess. I'm still the super boring guy running Debian stable with GNOME.

Anyways if you want to get into linux I would highly reccomend installing Linux Mint, if you are not scared of the terminal (or have used WSL) start with kubuntu (not ubuntu, canonical is shit).

I also personally don't like Stallman, he's annoying.

Mint is a good recommendation, but it's just Debian with an easier installer, right? Debian 13 is coming in a week or so and every time they release an upgrade, installation gets easier, so I don't know how much longer Mint will even be necessary. And Kubuntu is just Debian/Ubuntu with KDE. Lots of people use Debian with KDE. The one thing I'm on the fence about is systemd, but I guess I don't care enough to switch to a Devuan or another non-systemd distro.

Stallman is definitely a creep, but I don't think he has much influence on things anymore. Biggest question for Linux going forward is what happens when Linus retires.

I've never tried Kubuntu, but I did play around with Ubuntu years ago. Then Canonical wanted to become the Microsoft of Linux distros and I said screw that.

Fedora is good from what I hear, but Red Hat is now owned by IBM, so for how long Fedora will be good or even exist is in question. They already killed CentOS, which a lot of people (mostly server admins) were really mad about.

The beauty of Linux is that there will always be someone that will revive something, CentOS has been forked as AlmaLinux, Red Hat is a lesser canonical, and Fedora is fine, mostly because it’s popular, it just works,
It’s only financially backed by Red Hat, and RHEL (the Red Hat Enterprise distro) is downstreamed from fedora.

Also yeah Stallman is a creep, a proto-redditor, and said that he might have shadow autism (yes really).

Also check out r/linuxsucks101 it’s just a bunch of people hating on Linux for bogus reasons (or just skill issues lmao), they really need this webpage: http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm

There are so many distros out there it's sort of out of control. But basically, choosing one comes down to simple things like which package manager do you want, which software repos do you trust, do you need the latest kernel or is an older stable one better, a rolling release or fixed, which file system you prefer, X11 or Wayland and which desktop environment if you use one.

This is over simplifying, but not that much.

I subscribe to https://www.youtube.com/@CyberGizmo. He's an old timer with tons of knowledge that I'll never have. He's a Fedora guy, too.

We've come a long way pals, using fedora + jakoolit hyprland config, trying to config it to give it a BoC spin.

Also i learn't neovim.

Switch to gentoo to get the ultimate BoC (isolation from society) experience, you’ll be dead before Firefox ever compiles.

Sadly I do not have the hardware to compile that much. I like breathing new life in old computers and keeping things lightweight. But I do see the appeal setting every compiler flag to maximize the builds for your specific hardware and get it all buttery. But maybe some silly machine that uses Lynx or Dillo instead of firefox (meaning 90% of the internet stops working) might be feasible on gentoo.

The most isolated I've mained was FreeBSD for a few years, which is also extremely nice and sexy, if you don't have a social life. It's kind of like stephen king's Christine but its an operating system instead of a car.

I’d rather recommend dwm/dwl if you want to keep everything as lightweight as possible, and then install the xfce specific tools, that’s how my hyprland desktop works.

Excellent recommendation. I used ratpoison almost exclusively before, which is ultra-minimal like dwm but slightly more similar to gnu screen. I've used dwm too, I love that you configure it by changing a header file and recompiling. That suckless philosophy is near and dear to my heart.

But its been a problem when my other half needs to operate my computer for some rare digital emergencies, and then good luck explaining the peculiar composed bindings over the phone. So we meet in the middle and settle for xfce4.

She uses arch as well, btw. We keep coming back to it, even though neither of us are fond of the bleeding edge. Its just the least broken distro out there, and everything seems to just work as documented, and the AUR has almost everything you could want to use your computer for.

I use Gnome and I agree Gnome Software is shit. Nine times out of ten I have to kill it and restart it to make it work.

There are some gnome tools that are nice for newbs, like gnome-disk. But yeah most of it is quite bloated, slow and broken. I have the same with KDE, which, fine, it isn't broken, but still bloated and slow. Also a shame because I love kolourpaint and ghostwriter, but I have to pull 200mb of kde dependencies to run them (do I -really- need kWallet to run an ms-paint clone?).

Gnome on my pinephone was nice though. Its very touchscreen friendly, and almost becomes kind of androidy.

I'm going back to a mouse-less setup. I hate having to flail my arms back and forth. Was rocking xfce4 for a bit but I have to go back to tiling. dwm? Maybe there's something written in nim, I've been totally smitten with nim.

Sort of off-topic, but I recently purchased an SDR dongle (RTL-SDR Blog V4) so that I can turn one of my laptops into a radio receiver using only software and an antenna. I don't really know what I'm doing, but that's kind of the fun of it.

Many amateur radio hobbyists recommend using Dragon OS linux, which is based on Lubuntu, but comes pre-loaded with a bunch of utilities and drivers for doing SDR. I haven't decided if I should install it on the laptop directly or use a VM until I get a hang of it.

Thoughts?

That sounds really awesome. I kind of want one of those now, but I have way too many hobbies already.

Personally I tend to just stick to arch and cook my own soup of drivers and libraries for the largest chance of success. It even has a wiki page about this topic specifically: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/RTL-SDR But that's assuming you're at least a bit comfortable with the terminal. Installing arch isn't the PITA it used to be with archinstall, but its not as easy as simple as booting DragonOS from a thumbdrive.

Apropos switching back to tiling wms, I switched to hyprland. Its pretty fancy...maybe a little too fancy.
