Autechre Live
Just saw them last night in Boston and it was an absolute bonkers show. They opened with a piece that definitely had some drones slightly akin to BoC, but with these crazy rapid fire polyrhythmic drums. They sounded alien but also very primal. The whole thing was almost one constant song that was morphing throughout the set, which was all in complete darkness, no lights on for the venue. Also I've never felt bass as intense as this gig, it was blasting!
I was mostly just curious if Twoism-ers have seen them live and wanted to share their experiences.
Oh also there was a couple to the left of me who dropped acid and I could tell they were... going through it lol. At one point one of them said "I NEEED to sit DOWN," and I was just hoping it was all good haha.

Re: Autechre Live
Sounds like it was similar to the San Francisco show I attended. The sound was immense, my knees were buckling under the pummeling kicks! There was an incredible AE-styled Acid-Techno section at some point halfway into the set.
As much as I loved it and just submitted to it, I wished they had changed up the arrangement a little more here and there. A lot of it just felt like this cavalcade of mutating kicks... Awesome, but Sean pls throw a lush pad or two in there, or have a more ambient breakdown between the madness! Luckily Cygnus (who opened) delivered all manner of lush pads beforehand (his set was honestly incredible). I loved the Aeon Flux CGI naked babe dance troupe projections he had going too!

Re: Autechre Live
That sounds fantastic, I'll have to peep Cygnus. Also I totally agree, I was hoping for an ambient or lush pad movement somewhere in the set. Mutating kicks is the best way to describe it. Good to hear from another who attended one of their shows!

Re: Autechre Live
I saw em Oct 3 in MPLS. Didn't get to meet em but the venue was really small so they had to walk through the crowd to get to the stage, went right past me. Really special moment. When they came off stage got to say nice show to Rob real quick, also really cool.
This new set is wild, I enjoyed it a lot in the room but I actually think it's so dense it'll be best enjoyed as a soundboard. I was also lucky enough to also see em in Berlin in August, and that set felt a lot more room-ready, lots of discrete trax and sonic variety. Overall I still rock with Set C over everything else.

Re: Autechre Live
Also gonna doublepost and say that AE_LIVE is absolutely fucking wild. I've always felt that they have a really workmanlike approach to their music, it's constant tweaking and revising and putting in the hours, as opposed to the traditional, struck-with-sudden-inspiration model that's more common. It's not really better or worse than anything else, it's just an attitude to art that I admire.
And it shows with this stuff. Since 2022 they've put out like 4 hours of unique material, and in interviews they've said that they see it as one long song. I'm not sure that that's how I process it, but cool nonetheless. They've experimented with the structure of releases quite a bit over their career (Exai as 12"s, NTS as radio, EP7 is basically an album) and this is the next step.
Most of it also fucking bangs. I've been totally awash in these sets cos for the past two months I pick a set everytime I go to the gym and listen all the way through. idk if I can elaborate much more without writing a book here, but AE_LIVE is so impressive to me cos like with most art that enraptures me, it's holistic. There's beatless stuff, there's total bangers, there's challenging bits that deliberately throw off groove. Sometimes there's frontfacing melody, other times everything's swirling and anchored by just one note (see the three tone section of set C.) I LOVE when artists can pull off wild transitions and get cohesive.

Re: Autechre Live
Really well-worded and astute, I couldn't put it any better. I definitely agree about how you describe their approach to performing and I think that's what makes them particularly fascinating. I don't always necessarily "like" some of what's happening when they're doing it, but I think that is just a testament to how impressive and creative what they're doing is.Betterthanyourkids wrote:Also gonna doublepost and say that AE_LIVE is absolutely fucking wild. Can you point me to set C? I would love to hear.
Also I have yet to dig fully into AE_Live so I'm looking forward to a deeper dive for sure!

Re: Autechre Live
Yeah! I'll post the Sydney set cos it's the most immediate and has an absolutely outrageous groovy part at ~30:10:TaoTapeTao wrote:

Set C is a fan designation, I don't think AE would see any of the 2022- stuff as discrete. But yeah, they've performed 5 different sets of material so far. See this great breakdown of everything on aepages: https://aepages.org/wiki/AE_2022%EF%BC%8D
My fav set C stuff are the Paris & Rennes sets. I really like tracking the different sections and how they differ between sets using that page.

Also if anyone wants it, I did a tiny mixup on the bootleg of the Boston 10/11/25 show I went to. Here it is.
