sixtyniner (CWNN sampler 4, forthcoming releases)

Post by niski »

haven't seen a rip of "Sixty Niner" (sic) be posted from the 1996 Chain With No Name - Sampler 4, Forthcoming Releases compilation yet so i made my own

seems to be a CD quality version of psychogeographic X 7" sixtyniner, or something very close to it - i believe this might be the most unmastered version of the song that also hadn't been too altered by it being a vinyl rip like BOARD1

the diskono thing would match with the fact i was seeing heavy hyping up for that compilation on the IDM mailing list from way, way before it was actually released (and when diskono was called 4th world records)

How did I never hear about this?? So many obscure odd tracks and one-offs around that 1996 period.

Thanks for the upload! Very valuable insight into that Twoism-era sound design.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think this version is quite similar to the one that's on Boc Maxima.

as of now it seems like this, Maxima, and Psychogeographic X Sixtyniner are all variations on the same mix - Maxima's is phase inverted and compressed compared to here, and Psychogeographic X's is sped up for some reason (maybe a pressing error?) both the original 1995 BOARD1 Twoism and its 2002 rerelease use a separate mix, albeit cut down for 2002. you can compare the middle flute interludes between the two sets, all the non-Twoism ones have the same weird low pass filter or something come over the flute sample after a second.

looking at my own copy of this sampler you can see it credits this track to skam in 1996, which could indicate it was intended for the skam album that never materialized. this compilation and Boc Maxima both came out late 1996, and Psychogeographic X was apparently slated for 96 or 97 before being delayed, so it makes sense that they'd all use the same post-Twoism mix. maybe they considered it more 'finalized.'

just to add - the late 96 here is solely from the CD matrix code which i don't think is yet present on discogs: MASTERED BY NIMBUS C3643 CWNNCD4 - the C3643 seems to be fairly sequential and pretty close to that number i can find releases from september-november on discogs

Who runs the RareBOC website? Is Red Moss, this, and the newly leaked Old Tunes up on there yet? I know not a lot has leaked, but it's already a little hard to keep track of things.

Sounds like the background has some Bubbah Tum's BoC mix esque reverb on it in the beginning couple seconds in.

Very interesting... perhaps they had plans to reissue Boc Maxima on Skam at that stage? It was also around the same time that they were supposed to release an album on Planet Mu. I like to imagine an alternate timeline where Warp never picked them up and they stuck to underground labels and self-made releases.

yep, all very possible. planet mu release i reckon was being discussed a bit later, like 1997 on hyperreal. maxima however i believe is almost exactly from the late 96 timeframe and this mix is a similar or identical one (but without further mastering?) that exists on maxima

Thanks for posting.

I guess this release is the first time BoC appeared on CD?
