Random 35 Tracks Tape Restore and Remaster.

Originally worked on the Restore to have something for myself that would sound decent on Car speakers and Conduction Earphones. Shared on TMW Discord and enough folk were interested that I uploaded it there, decided as someone else will work on this further and add their denoise of this to youtube I should also do so myself and have this version available.

Attempts to bring the Niski/OliveOil renoise closer to the sound of the original tape. Increases dynamic range and high frequency content, reduced CD Skipping further, de-hums, bringing playback speed closer to original tracks. Uses the 192KBPS rips as the main reference with additional references from digital and HQ versions of the tracks that exist elsewhere.

High frequency content is increased by EQ then using noise reduction to bring noise back down to a reasonable level whilst losing as little information as possible so there is still quite a lot of tape hiss present.



I then listened to this in my car and found it lacking still so I did a less faithful remaster with further boosted high end, more artefact fixes, slight saturation added and more even volume levels throughout.



Full credit to TheNiski and OliveOil22 as this wouldn't work without the renoise.

Sounds good. I think this will be my preferred version of r35tt from now.

Think I'll rework the remaster version to have slightly lower treble at some point. Keeping the Restore version as is.

Could you go into more detail on how you attempted to clean up the noise reduction on the high end?

Thank you for sharing this with us! I've been listening to the Old Tunes tapes pretty much non-stop now that we have the new FLAC rips. Without your hard work of R35TT specifically I think there would've been something missing :D

Sometimes the bass comes up a little too high for me, but I think that's down to my own specific setup, it's nothing I can't fix with some EQ changes (or some tweaks in audacity). But I'm damn sure this is better than the mp3s I got in 2009, hell we're talking about a bassline I didn't even know about before.

The noise reduction itself was cleaned up by Niski/OliveOil.

All I've done with that part is a bit of transient shaping and expanding to help restore smeared transients. Works at different speed depending on frequency to give a natural sound and stuck to the subtler side.

The Niski/OliveOil Restoration adds a lot of noise back in, but the treble is still a lower than the incomplete B side we have as a reference, So I boosted the treble, then denoised very slightly with an extremely slight Spectral denoise with a very aggresive reduction curve. Targetted specific frequencies more and 0 of the "enhancements" turned on paying a lot of attention to the noise only output to make very little if any music has been cut.

This is then fed into the same noise reduction machine learning algorithm used on Alexw's modern denoise. The noise only output from that is then taken and has a further slight spectral denoise applied. this is then mixed back in with the denoised file, which is then mixed back in with the raw undenoised file. The mixing of the layers is done where any place the denoise is going to unavoidably remove information, I add more of the original noisy track to compensate.

The majority of remaining CD clicks were fixed, de-hum was applied, playback speed is adjusted based on full quality copies we have and the hum frequency, not perfect but should be much closer to original speed.

Due to the increased treble, some of the MP3 artefacts around 16Khz become audible in places so those are low passed out - any Mp3 artefacts at frequencies with original music information are left unaltered and are probably my biggest issue with the final sound but can't really do much about them.

A07 is replaced with a version from a different (also badly noise reduced) rip as the second half or so of A07 has insane amounts of CD skipping on the high end.

That roughly makes up the restore version, may be missing one or two things.

The remaster version also has another denoise pass taking it again through the ML Algorithm and then recombining after filtering through where it's removed stuff it shouldn't, more even dynamics between tracks some slight, a little more EQ and subtle saturation applied to the high end to try and smooth the mp3 artefacts slightly.
