right, but which of the 'framed guys from the VHS' - "He’s Alex jones whom was involved in the reconstruction of the Branch Davidian building in Waco in 1999. The frame in the vhs might be slightly different from this but I’m pretty confident he’s one of the guys."

which frame in the VHS is supposed to be Alex Jones?

Idk, compartmentalizing everything in the footage as if its very "Gen X" seems a bit dismissive and misses the forest for the trees. These are themes that they've always explored, and nothing about it seems old or dated in terms of a generation. Resurrection makes much more sense to me. They, and their world, are very much alive.

Although I liked zeoevil's post earlier in the thread - about the video themes/images on the tape progressing in the same way as their discography, so maybe the tape only shows the 'progress to date' and there's a part 2 (maybe on the longer tape?) that indicates the new album's theme.
If it's what inspires them though, they are Gen Xers after all, and that world brought about this one, we're still feeling the effects of those topics today.

I'm a little surprised they are still able to find new artifacts to pull out and sample and whatnot, they're not pulling the low hanging fruit. And new ways to use them as well.
Yeah, I'm just a bit surprised that it feels so vintage BOC after all this time - it did feel at launch that Tomorrow's Harvest was a distinct move forward to a different era, even to the point that it was getting criticism, but the references here feel older. Again, not a criticism, just wondering if that means anything, like an indicator of a BOCset rather than a new album.
Totally agree. The nature of the teaser promo and hype this time—fans ripping and sharing a tape that is probably the most distorted thing we've seen from BOC so far—suggests we're in for something more lo-fi and "tapey" than what's been done before.

My interpretation of the hyper-degraded nature is 1) it’s meant to be a minimal teaser 2) it’s a nod to this
"We could only exist in the short pocket of time when music has made the transition form analogue to digital," agrees Sandison. "There's this little moment where there's enough nostalgia attached to the former recording media and the faults that it had, that certain people will get it, and understand what we're doing. If there's sadness in the way we use memory," he goes on, "it's because the time you're focusing on has gone forever. I guess it's a theme we play on a lot, that bittersweet thing where you face up to the fact that certain chapters of you life are just Polaroids now."
Like I said in another thread, it’s like the final breath of an old tape to represent the fact that now there’s a generation of adults who never dealt with analog media. The pocket of time they’re describing is over. I’d expect the album to be pretty hi-fi. They’re into advanced sound engineering after all.

that's definitely not Alex Jones, not from 1999 or any time.

Good to see some old members resurfacing. :)

I can’t keep up with every bit of information going around, so this may have already been discussed but something crossed my mind:

Didn’t all the tape owners technically ignore the warning on the tape by sharing it? I know this is a very common VHS era disclaimer and it might just be there to add to the overall aesthetic, but I wonder if there’s more to it?

Maybe not just in the text itself, but in the act of sharing it anyway and any implied consequences. It might be a stretch, but knowing how far BoC tends to go, and how carefully things are constructed, I wouldn’t rule anything out.

I’m not a native English speaker, so I might miss some nuances, but I ran it through AI and got the following observations:

  1. “LICENCED”
This is the British spelling (with a c), whereas many VHS warnings tend to use American English (“licensed” with an s).
Not incorrect, but the mix can feel a bit unusual.
  2. “COMPRISED IN THIS VIDEOCASSETTE”
This is the most noticeable one.
    More common phrasing would be:
    “contained in this videocassette”
    “included in this videocassette”
“comprised in” sounds slightly unnatural or less standard.
  3. “DIFFUSION AND/OR BROADCAST”
“Diffusion” is rarely used in this kind of warning.
    More typical would be:
    “distribution”
    or simply “broadcast”
“Diffusion” feels more like a European/legal translation.
  4. Structure / flow
    The meaning is standard, but:
it feels a bit wordier and less tight than typical studio warnings
official versions usually follow a more fixed structure with shorter phrasing
In short:
Nothing is outright wrong, but it feels like:
a European / localized variant, or
a slightly altered version of a standard template

Could that be co-incidence?

That’s a fair point Aesthetics. I straight-up dismissed the disclaimer as a trademark BoC aesthetic and a psychological trick to create some ”secret” vibe. They expected people to post it online because that’s how the campaign is supposed to work

Was interesting to see this quite generic notice on the tapes. As it was produced with global recipients in mind maybe it made more sense for Warp to go with it. At least for UK and maybe Aus and NZ folks of a certain vintage we may remember more specific versions of VHS copyright text,

The copyright proprietor has licensed the programme (including its soundtrack) comprised in this video cassette for home use only. All other rights reserved. The definition of home use excludes the use of this video cassette at locations such as clubs, coaches, hospitals, hotels, oil rigs, prisons and schools. Any unauthorised copying, editing, exhibition, renting, hiring, exchanging, lending, public performances, diffusion and/or broadcast of this video cassette or any part thereof is strictly prohibited and any such action establishes liability for a civil action and may give rise to criminal prosecution.

If you google "exhibition, renting, exchanging" you can find several examples of the exact text, so I'm sure it's a generic one that was widely used.

The sound at the end of the audio on the tape (1:21)

Matches this sound at the start of Societas X tape (0:25)

What is this sound, radio scanning?

My first thought when I saw the copyright message was if there could be something hidden in it - but after a few viewings, I didn't notice anything that stands out that caught my attention.

I can't shake that it would have some relevance, but have no idea what, haha. Growing up watching VHS movies in Canada, we had similar messaging (usually the FBI Warning like the Americans had) so it's also a familiar sight to see.

Ya, it's radio scanning. A sound experience that possibly inspired quite a lot of Boards of Canada's motivation for adding interesting detail to their music. As you scan through radio stations you can't help but have your interest peak every time something odd comes through the speakers. Then you start diving into what was the source. Some sounds are naturally occurring and some are man made. Time to solve the puzzle of the little weird and beautiful sound that played for a brief moment as I was scanning. Makes me want to get into the hobby.
So, them placing radio scanning sounds in songs, albums, projects, and promotions makes me feel like I'm the one scanning through and stumbling on the rabbit hole of weird and beautiful sounds. It makes it feel like it's my adventure.

Love the recent posts here. Discord and Reddit just move to fast for me nowadays. But that's another story. I can't seem to shake the feeling that they're teasing something old here with these tapes.. Something that eventually shows up on their Hell Interface YT at some point. Then again, maybe it just seems that way because the tapes are nothing more than a wake up call. A reminder that things are still happening and slowly approaching the public.

Since were at the stage where everything is possible I hope for both old and new. That's not too much to ask for after all this time, right?

Nah, I need a RIP so we can extract from it like we have NTSC. There may be a way of lining them up that exposes something.

Love the breakdown of the copyright warning Aesthetics. Since first seeing it, the biggest thing that leaped out at me was the "diffusion" bit. I've never seen the word used in copyright, but I am from Canada/North America so maybe it just isn't as common here.

Interestingly enough, Merriam-Webster's defines 'diffusion' as "the state of being spread out or transmitted especially by contact" -- which makes my mind instantly jump to something along the lines of 'sharing via the internet'. There are also science-related definitions of diffusion, in both physics and chemistry. :D

Completely agree that the overall phrasing of the warning/notice has a European vibe to it. My gut says it is probably a totally unique/original message created by the BoC Bros, based on more traditional copyright warnings found in home media. I find it odd that they would go out of their way to make a completely original copyright warning specifically for this VHS tape, but hey, it's BoC. Is there more hiding there? Hard to say -- but that's half the fun of this whole VHS situation, isn't it?

Happy hunting all!!
