I actually had a course in college where I studied Corbusier. He was a big reason why all the big urban centers in the 20th century look the way they do. Big blocky concrete steel buildings with lots of green space in between. International style it was called. The Geography of Nowhere.

Speaking of brutalist architecture, it's remarkable that the main source of images in the Tape 05 clip is from a movie projected at the Philipps Pavillon in the 1958 world's fair called "Poème électronique",
the whole building-poem being crafted by Le Corbusier pioneering brutalist + pioneering electronic musician Varège. (+ Xennakis that seemed to have done both).

So much was erupting and brewing throught those years, 1967 in Montreal we had the International Exposition: Man and his world, with the geodesic dome for the U.S.A. Pavillion by Buckminster Fuller, not brutalist but certainly within the trend of utopia.

And also of course, Psyché Rock would be released as part of Messe pour le temps présent by Pierre Henry and Michel Colombier, for Maurice Béjart's dance project.

Most people outside of GenX would get to taste Psyché Rock as the inspiration for the Futurama theme.

I remembered this quote from NME February of 2002.

It's cool to see that they still draw inspiration from memories like this. I remember when I read that quote it stuck with me. I have travelled to places where certain buildings seem very out of place and juxtaposing in relation to its surroundings. Sort of falls in line with idea of "Somewhere Right Now In The Future." To me it does anyway... sort of like looking ahead to what could've been or might be.

My abiding memory of Calgary when I was there nearly 20 years ago was driving to it from the Rockies and as the mountains receded in the rear view mirror, the city seemed to rise up out of the endless steppe. Never been anywhere so flat and featureless.

After a few days, I have another thought about why I don’t like the cover. It’s too regular. There’s nothing special about it that couldn’t have been done by any other band. It’s not hard to make any photo look like this, or impressive. They’ve simply always been more clever than this.

It’s a shame too, I was scrolling through the homepage of Peter Iain Campbell’s website and realizing how much I would prefer a lot of these photos: https://www.peteriaincampbell.co.uk/

Of course— none of this matters without the music. Maybe the album merits the cover perfectly, where Campbell’s photos may not match the vibes. I’m still completely open to the album

I like the artwork and the font. I like how the imagery bleeds into the treeline at the bottom that extends from the bottom right to the bottom left of the artwork. I also think it's interesting that there's a lot of ambiguity about the person on the right in the artwork.

I think a lot of the disaproval is symptomatic of the greater issue being that people tend to do reject things they're not used to or are new in a certain unexpected way. At least that was how I'd describe my initial feelings towards the album artwork. The more I looked at it the more I liked it.

Is anyone else thinking about the contrast between the dark, impenetrable quality of the cover art and the wide-open psychedelia of the imagery inside?

I’m sharing this list again of what we can see inside the album so far: wide open landscapes with hexagons scattered across the sky, people on horseback, inexplicable brutalist monuments, Incredible String Band-like imagery of children inspecting flowers, a gigantic crucifix suspended above a parking lot, and the image of the girl with white eyes recalls the poster that came with the Hi Scores remaster, all against the shadowy cover.

Robert Beatty: “I've been credited a few places with doing the artwork for the Boards of Canada album - wanted to clarify I didn't do the album artwork or the VHS, just the trailer and the "Introit/Prophecy At 1420 MHz" video (so far…)”

He also said that Mike and Marcus made Tape 05.
