I will start off...
This track is called "Mountain Folk". If you checked out Open Source Music my last record, you will notice an extreme shift in my sound. Where is she going I wonder?
I'm working on my dark side. I'm trying to get some industrial/idm/prog/jazz/metal going which is about as easy as you would imagine. I'm also practicing metal vocals, and got my gutteral and fry "good enough" for a demotape. I have a bunch of sketches and a little book of hate I write in. But I'm not going to share anything yet.
After working for several years as composer for kinda "mainstream" content (documentaries, youtube influencers etc), i'm preparing two releases and taking my time for it :
- A release inspired by Boards of Canada taped tones and Aphex Twin analord acid. I'd love to visit this unsettling world, mix it with the phillip glass-ey strings from Aphex, and work around the idea of time being the ennemy of your own serenity
- A release inspired by Flying Lotus Los Angeles and 1983 album. I kinda feel like this kind of music is a new genre by itself and deserve to be expanded to new horizons. I would consider it as "cosmic soul", where the love emerge from the machine, depicting a virtual world full of sentience and emotional synapses
I bought a Roland D-50 a year or so ago, currently needing a little fixing (most of the buttons don't work, but you can control it via midi. Might just leave it there cos I'm scared to take the soldering iron too much lol). Anyway. The reason I got it is to make some 1987-ass music.
Specifically inspired by certain film soundtracks of that era and a particular aesthetic that resonates with me a lot cos I lived through it, that I've never really see anyone mess with. Not another retrowave thing, something shinier and gayer.
And this particular synth is the key, cos it has a very particular sound, it was an oddity of a time when technology had got good but memory was too expensive (not like now ha) to use so they had to get creative, and it was obsolete within a couple of years. So it just sounds like 1987, forever, like an endlessly timelocked summer.
Roland D-50 is a classic. I like the JV-1080 a lot as well for the 90s sounds.
I've been playing with the reason 14 beta i just got access to yesterday, it has a new reverb it it - i was using it with jiggery pokery animus shimmer as well with some stock sounds

I saw reason 14 beta and decided to give it a try myself too. Not made anything in it yet worth sharing but I am very much liking it so far. Sounds awesome just is! Excited to see where you go

I use the d-50 a stupid amount in my music. Sometimes I just play with the patch "Digital Native Dance" for hours. So many awesome sounds from her. She is my favourite synth ever!
Such an iconic sound that is literally so everywhere that you can't help but pick it out in a bunch of old 80s records
I've been finishing several little releases that I've made on the Polyend tracker over the past three years. About 42 tracks overall? I have the different releases t'eed up, but for the most part a lot of it is ambient, lofi electronic stuff. Also another bigger album I'm currently mixing that is a more focused combo of weird glitchiness re Autechre, sampled video game corruption sounds, and BoC vibes. It's all very rhythm heavy. I'm hoping for that to be ready for next Winter.
I love programming drums and percussion that are constantly changing and varying. I've become obsessed with it.
Then once I have all that banged out, I'm leaning towards something guitar heavy, perhaps very psychedelic and shoegazey.
