Wow this is surreal after 18 years of listening to the old rips. Although there are only a few truly stellar tracks here (like Kiteracer 2, 5.9.78), a lot of the tracks are on a par with something you'd hear from underground amateur artists. Not that they're bad but makes me wonder why I'd obsess over these tracks instead of seeking out those other artists

Wil AFOT be offered up on archive.org as well?

Small comparison here of BMX Track from the two new sources.

One is sam's studio cassette rip,
the other is the 1998 Peel Session CD "bonus mystery tracks" version aka Some Old Tunes WAV (from babylulu's source via rareboc)

Both are very high quality, with none of the usual 16kHz cutoffs or NR.

Peel Session CD: waveform | spectral

Perhaps they hadn't quite yet hit their stride in terms of production quality/technical ability when making these tracks, but that certainly isn't everything. The magic was always there. They always had an impeccable ear for melodies and overall aesthetic within the music. Not everything needs to be polished to the finest detail in order to be 'good'.

I, personally, find myself returning to the Old Tunes tapes more than their official albums these days.

You can say that again. Their commercial work is much more technically advanced and sophisticated. You can tell they started really pushing themselves and laboring over taking their craft to the next level.

However I'm still curious about their early albums. What are the "old tunes" exactly - as far as the band is concerned? A compilation of some throwaway experiments? A lot of the tracks consist of a simple drum loop + synth patch and that's it. Nothing particularly innovative. I don't think you can just jump from that to making Twoism all of a sudden.

Yeah I'm with you on this. I'm glad these tracks are out as they make many fans happy, but I personally never found them all that great to begin with. I'm still hoping new music is coming.

It sounds like demo-tape (which it is). It take some involvement (and money) to properly mix and master stuff for release, getting some extra ears on it, have it curated more. Especially in the old days when everybody had to borrow each-others equipment.

There's some amazing tracks in there though, for which I am willing to sit through sir prancelot brainfire...again.

Big ups to Reddit user sdowww for the original track split. I went ahead and trimmed the excess silence fat, so OTV2 can now comfortably fit on a CD-R. Enjoy!

Having made myself a colour cover for AFOT using the Hi-Scores digital re-release cover I wanted something similar for OTV2 so I fed the cover into the image colouriser that I use to restore old/damaged photographs & from the old photocopy cover it did this

I like a square image for folders & CD covers so I tweaked the orientation a little and this came out. Feel free to use if you like em.

Insane considering it's a photocopy. I ran it a few times and there was some crazy glitches though.

While I'm here. This is an alternate Hi Scores cover. No trickery here just 2 images that look like they were meant to be together.
