Beatty said he doesn’t even use After Effects. He’s using simple tools to make this work, and this approach is aligned with BOC’s music.

He has also clarified that he had nothing to do with the album art or Tape 05, that’s all Hexagon Sun.

What tools does he use exactly? Some analog video synthesizers from the looks of it. I found a video of an actual vintage synthesizer from the 70s and there are similarities in the aesthetics but I don't know if it's plausible he got his hands on something like this, modern gear can still have a similar look. I think video was filtered through a video synthesizer but I don't know if it's possible it was generated with one.

He said he uses a 15 year old DSLR, Photoshop for animation, and Vegas for editing.

So check this, I am a photographer and was doing a shoot yesterday in the north of Scotland, I had to give my client a lift to the location and en route through the Scottish Highlands I put on MHTRTC as it was the perfect landscape for it, my client asked "who is this?" to which I replied, "it's a Scottish band called Boards of Canada". "Ah no way, my friend just did some photography for their new album, they have a new album coming out right?

*record scratch

Me: "Sorry what?"

Her: "Yeah I'll drop him a text and ask him to be sure"

So he gets back to us and it turns out it was him that made the video edits on the promo VHS videos, I shit you not! He even sent us a video of him in this dark room creating the videos on an old CRT. It was wild lol. So as not to get in trouble, I shall make sure he's okay being named first.

That's amazing!

When you say 'video edits', I assume he was responsible for essentially degrading Tape 05 into what we saw on the promo tapes?

Yes exactly, I've asked if his identity is to remain secret, he's not gotten back yet.

Remember this? He only had done those two videos so far... are we getting more? On Friday?

A new video being premiered at the sessions seemed like a big possibility but the fact they didn't show the Prophecy video either makes this somewhat more plausible.

Spoiler: show
The listening session posters are very much his style, so maybe it's that?

There was nothing particularly Beatty-esque about the 'You Retreat...' video. It was essentially a bunch of old super 8 footage. I could be wrong, though!

I heard about that video. My thinking is, they didn't display the Prophecy video because it would've been a disproportionate amount of visual information compared to the rest of the show. "You Retreat" is the penultimate track so it's not distracting at that point, if anything it's a nice payoff near the end - and like you said, I haven't seen any of it but sounds like something the bros would make. There could be a big Beatty production for one of the other tracks incoming but that's just speculation. It would be a lot of work for one man at that point. It's pretty funny how I've been right about some takes so maybe the gamble will pay off again... or not

I quickly bought the only current work available at his site for around $13. It took awhile to arrive. I didn't photo all the inner pages - thought I had... But how I see it is as an unfiltered automatic writing sort of playground visual sketchbook. The bizarro nonsequitors didn't make me laugh as much as Kool Keith or early Beck might. Dadaist/surrealist inspired (letting out what comes out) but referencing 50s-70s commercial art.Image Image Image

Just need to get this down. I've recently seen a few people still bringing up Beatty's "(so far...)" comment about the visuals he provided for the album after the Prophecy video came out. It seems likely now that since that comment, the remaining visuals he was referring to are probably those from the promo video on release day:

As well as the Canvas video loops for each track which are on Spotify. The Canvas clips are edited differently from the promo video and there's some unique visuals across both I think. You can view and download the clips using this site:

These visuals are beautiful :-] Beatty is an amazing artist
