In live sound, you mix for the dynamics of the room, and we have no idea if tracks like "echus" or "atp-07" even have a "studio version" counterpart. Regardless, many live versions of released BoC songs contain marginally different sonic, textural & structural elements compared to their studio counterparts, anyways. I have no idea why someone would fake something like this so meticulously and take literally no credit for it unless they were a sadistic troll with all the time in the world on their hands .
They created the songs in their studio first, then decided to play them live. Hence, "studio version" counterpart. That's all I meant.
I definitely hear a difference in the notes played. It's the last few notes at the very end of the loop. Notes that are prominent in the live recording, but you only hear the faint delay/echoes where the note should be in the "soundboard."
I suppose it's mostly pointless to argue against live recordings sounding different than what the soundboard would be, because that's true. But from my own experience in audio engineering, there are inconsistencies that can't hide behind that excuse. Things no room and recording device is going to fix. From my ears the bass in a few spots is just far too compressed and missing frequencies and in parts has inconsistent attack/release timings.
Consider just the bass in the opening. The live recording has the bass punching in hard. 1 note sustained for about a second with a small fade out, it's volume loudest in the first half of the sample. Then the soundboard recording has it phase in as if it's side-chained with the percussion through a compressor with a slow release (giving the bass a slow attack as a result) and then a delay was added to give it an echo. You can hear the delay play the bass note twice and it's the second note that is the loudest, making the second half of the sample the loudest. This is happening because it's not the same sample being used and it's not the same effects and mixing techniques being used. There is next to 0 life in the bass in this "soundboard" recording. I could go on and on, but I don't see the point.
I simply cannot buy the idea that this soundboard recording is what came out of those speakers at ATP and then through the room space and into 2 recording devices (as we have 2 separate people who recorded it live to compare) and in that process it magically changed the sound in a way that just isn't possible.
If you think it's real, no worries. Listen and enjoy. We differ in opinion. That's all. I'm not so sure there is a way I can definitively prove this is fake. If MDG chimes in and says it's real, I will happily eat my words and will remain confused.
There's no reason to jump to an extreme as to why someone would make these songs and lie about it. If someone is having fun trying to recreate it, then wanted to test their ability in recreating the music, the best test would be to hand it out and say it was real. Plenty of people have faked BoC in the past and I doubt any of them were sadists. Probably just people looking for validation or pulling a simple prank.
I went through old download folders and couldn't find the samples I was sent. I don't recall who sent them to me either. But the more I listen to the soundboard the more I'm convinced it's comprised of those samples, minus the samples that were incomplete. Because I had the same gripe with those samples as I do with this "soundboard" leak. There is some very well done work in this. Don't get me wrong. I don't think it's utter trash, I just definitely don't think it's real.
