Those who will be listening late

Post by llydia »

Well...

Looks like life had some plans in store for me that I am just coming to terms with. Essentially, I've gone deaf before the new album drops. Inferno, came to me a bit early it seems. Its very unlikely I will be able to listen clearly when it comes out, as I will be waiting for my health to fully return. I don't know, I have kind of full hearing in one ear, but my right ear is like somebody turned it down to 10% and its got a hiss and somebody is pissing about with a crisp packet. Its been a week and a half now and its still not cleared up. I am hoping and praying doctors can do something for me on Thursday.

Anybody else in the same boat right now? How do we cope on the 29th? Should I just listen to the Mono version? I mean, the left channel on the single sounds very good! I've not even been able to fully listen to it yet! My god, the last time this happened to me was literally 13 years ago... is it a sign?

Sometimes Bluetooth earbuds run out of charge in one ear before the other and I'm too lazy to do anything. So I listen with one ear for a while. You get use to it and sometimes you discover aspects of a mix that you never heard before. Sometimes people hate it when you try to look on the bright side of their suffering.

You haven’t explained the suffering.

That sounds awful. I hope its just some temporary setback and not permanent hearing loss.

You could merge the stereotracks in audacity and listen to it in mono without losing any details. iirc the brothers said in an interview somewhere they think mono is underrated.
Throw away your smartphone.

And if it is permanent hearing loss, you could go back to programming. You liked programming didn't you?

If you have an Iphone, you can go to the accessibility settings and set the audio to mono. I even have a shortcut for that, because sometimes i use only one earbud, so mono is better. I'm sure Android must have a similar setting.

I hope you're doing better.

Thank you so much everyone. Its genuinely been terrifying to me as I am a musician by nature, I work with Audio all the time... I've had to come to terms with the fact this might not be a little thing and that is terrifying! Regardless, I am going to see what the doctors say to me and hopefully they can just rinse them out and the problem is solved.

I will probably just take the advice mentioned here and listen to it in Mono. I've been so excited for this for years now. Me and my wife were planning a whole meal and we've even saved a bottle of wine that we actually bought in 2016 with the idea that we'd crack it open when Inferno drops.

This thread was really so I didn't feel alone.

Its not the same thing by a long shot but I had a thing a few years back where every so often my hearing would go out of tune. No idea what it was and they couldn't find a reason. Ears are weird. But again, being a musician I could describe the exact effect, it was like a constant amount ADDED on to every frequency so things that were in tune sounded off. Literally, octaves sounded out of tune. For a while it'd make every bit of music I heard sound fucking weird, then the next week I'd wake up one day and it was back to normal.

Sometimes weird stuff does just happen, and there's not a lot you can do but sometimes these things do just resolve

Not sure if it's the same thing that happened to you, but no harm in sharing it.

If i were you i would just listen to it anyway, by the time your ear is fixed you will still be taking in the album.

Dang, hope your hearing recovers soon! As for the album, I have intentionally avoided listening to any of the promotional material (except the VHS tape), and although I bought the album today, I will be sitting on it until I feel like listening to it. Maybe I'll age it in my cellar like a bottle of vintage wine. In another 13 years, it'll sound extra crusty!
