Inferno - Written & Produced by Mike Sandison

Post by losador »

Anyone notice that on the sleeve notes? Pasted below:

BOARDS OF CANADA
INFERNO

BOARDS OF CANADA: MIKE SANDISON & MARCUS EOIN

ALL TRACKS WRITTEN & PRODUCED BY MIKE SANDISON

RECORDED BY BOARDS OF CANADA AT HEXAGON SUN
MIKE SANDISON: ELECTRONICS, SYNTHS, TAPES, PROGRAMMING, AUDIO EVOCATIONS, DRUMS, PERCUSSION, GUITARS, BASS, STRING INSTRUMENTS, PROCESSES & SOUND DESIGN
MARCUS EOIN: ELECTRONICS, SYNTHS, TAPES, PROCESSES & SOUND DESIGN
MASTERED BY MATT COLTON AT METROPOLIS STUDIOS, LONDON
ARTWORK, FILMS, PHOTO COLLAGE & DESIGN BY BOARDS OF CANADA

THANKS TO ALL FRIENDS & FAMILY FOR YOUR SUPPORT IN THE MAKING OF THIS RECORD
SPECIAL THANKS TO PETER IAIN CAMPBELL

Thought that was interesting.. maybe Marcus Eoin will write Purgatorio, and they'll both write Paradiso!

But in all seriousness.. any insight into that at all from anyone? Is it a first at least as far as the sleeve credits are concerned?

This is so interesting, because while I liked it, I felt like there was something missing the whole way through. Now I know what it is. Can’t wait for the interviews to come out!

I haven't heard it yet, tomorrow for me.. I really loved the Tape 05 track and the Prophecy one though. Have they ever done anything like this before, or always credited to both?

Love Lost Highway too btw...

This has been discussed. It is indeed strange, because Mike called Marcus a "producer genius" in an interview and he has been known to contribute songwriting in the past. Farewell Fire appears to be a Marcus solo track

Getting co-credits for production and songwriting wouldn't have required much. Nobody knows what's going on and rumors are rife that they won't be doing interviews

What's interesting and not necessarily discussed much is that Mike did complete a master's degree in music. Marcus studied artificial intelligence and dropped out. Mike appears to have always been the core songwriter and is a multi-instrumentalist as well whereas Marcus is more of a tech guy.

Truth be told, we don't know and while it's only natural to speculate (I had my own thoughts when I first heard), on reflection, this IS still a Boards of Canada record. It says so on the front of the record and I don't think they'd be so cynical as to put the name above the door unless they both felt it was worthy of it in every sense. They don't strike me as people who do things half-arsed or by accident.

Marcus still has significant credits. ie. He's involved. That's good enough for me.

I'm not putting much thought into this subject. They've said in multiple interviews over the years that Mike's been the primary writer. They also write hundreds of songs that never end up on an album. It's entirely possible that Marcus either didn't write anything at all, it's also entirely possible they decided that anything Marcus wrote just didn't fit the vibe for this album. I've no reason to believe this album is any less of a team effort than previous albums.

Just to add to the confusion Marcus has writing credits for some of the tracks on the ASCAP site

Exactly, Mike seems to be the primary song writer and always has been.

Interesting! I know people have probably scanned thru the ASCAP registered songs, but a quick look and I see titles like "Flute Frum Thing" that are credited to the brothers that I have never heard of? Probably something I missed in the last few years. Also, since when did they register all the Old Tunes tracks? I'm wondering if that is more recent due to the proliferation of YT rips and streams.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, several OT and other BoC tracks are credited to Orphel Binuswade and Denifry Ketchler? I recognize the Orphel (suspected BoC alias or Hexagon Sun member) but not Denifry. Love finding these details...

EDIT EDIT: OK ignore me on the Flute Frum Thing, I forgot that has a Bocpages entry and is just music from Chris Cunningham ads/released as vignettes on LPs.

What I DID spy was this

https://web.archive.org/web/20010205045 ... edits.html

Among the credits is listed 'Deni'. Has to be this Denifry Ketchler name that's credited on ASCAP.
The preparation for a dive is always a tense time.

I agree. Mike was credited similarly on the Sexual Objects record too.

Marcus has 10% writing of

Prophecy at 1420 MHz
Into the Magic Land
All Reason Departs
Arena Americanada
The Process
Blood in the Labyrinth

Mike solo the others, and split even for the rest of the albums.

Note this is just the writing splits and not the split of the master recording side.

I wonder why PIC got special thanks if the bros took and edited the pictures themselves. Maybe he gave them some camera equipment. Maybe it doesn't really matter? Everyone else is included in "friends" though

Same! The whole thing feels like a beat-tape - some stellar ideas and production - but the tracks achieve 80% and then dont really go anywhere. Definitely missing the sparkle / surprise / narrative of other albums

I believe BOC produced the photos and had creative control, but PIC took/edited/processed the actual photos at their direction.

But I saw somewhere on social media that in the closing credits of Backrooms The Word Becomes Flesh is 'written by Michael Sandison and Marcus Sandison'.
