The more I relisten to this, the more I am convinced the religious samples in these first few tracks, and especially this one, are some kind of epic piss take. They took the most classic sounding “boc track” on the album, then threw in some “hare krishna” samples, saying “i bet these guys will lap up anything, just like the tamborine brigade”. They then looked up the word for “hell/purgatory” for the title. It’s the same side of them that samples Blockbusters, porno movies and calls tracks “june 9th”. It’s interesting the way the album turns after this track.

My thoughts line up increasingly with yours, except to me phrases like epic piss sound more and more downright serious, something ambiguously embedded in cathartic display. I would go so far as to say they share a sincere albeit nuanced appreciation for religiosity and the mythic, apophenic line of development even if adumbrated through their own lens. Not the only ones in their generation —or ever, for that matter.

There's a broiling tension at the core of this song like a perched-up magnetic field, across its tritonic tread and each small detail within.

I think you’re just traumatized from being annoyed by Hare Krishnas.

The use of the mantra in Naraka is so beautifully musical - it isn’t just a one-dimensional joke.

The aspect of Naraka that makes me laugh are the snaps. I keep thinking of Alias’s production on Less Is Orchestra with Doseone.

Also, there’s a Japanese interview from 2006 where BOC mentions this band called Golden Avatar that was formed by a Hare Krishna devotee.

You're correct - They didn't put the sample in for spite, or to mock their fans. That's a jaded perspective that isn't in line with how BoC usually operates.

Just look at BoC acknowledging Amo Bishop Roden and 'In a Beautiful Place in the Country.' They didn't reference the Koreshians multiple times as a slight/insult, they did it because there's beauty to be found within the chaos.
