1) IABPOITC
2) MHTRTC
3) Campfire..
4) Hi Scores
IABPOITC is probably the best encapsulation of what they do, but generally the best BoC is "Turquoise BoC".

I've always felt the same about MHTRTC tbh. Love it, and it has some of my fave tracks ever on it but it's a mixtapeIanRedpoint wrote: What has surprised me is how much I now view MHTRTC as a compilation of (admittedly great) tracks, rather than as a cohesive album. I think of Twoism, MHTRTC, Hi-Scores and Box Maxima as a pool of songs that can be re-arranged in any order.

Lots of solid Top 4's here, but yours is almost identical to mine!Mafache wrote:Geogaddi

But I love everything they've ever released, I even listen to 'Peel Session' at least once per year.
Makes me happy to see Inferno climbing its way into so many fans' hearts!
I need to stop reading the whiny comments on Instagram; I think it's a very vocal minority that doesn't like Inferno at all, and I get the impression that the whiners are people with no attention span who only listened up to 'Father and Son.'

If I was including EP's IABPOITC may sneak in to the top 4.

In no particular order...

Tomorrow's Harvest
IABPOITC
Inferno

IABPOITC
Inferno
Re: Your top 4 BoC releases now that Inferno is out
Inferno > Geogaddi > Tomorrow's Harvest > Music Has The Right To Children.
Inferno and the associated all-album-listening completely changed the order, but The Campfire Headphase has always been my least favourite album. It still has to be noted that all things BoC are over the 95th percentile in personal preference, so regardless of their order, they're still all my most favourite music.

You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike.

-Geogaddi (simply because it has the track in the Annexe on it and that track literally makes me feel things I can’t explain)
-MHTRTC (just because of the memories I have, playing it while hanggliding in Eastern Europe, skiing in Banff, living in a land where it was always twilight (Utqiaġvik). Just too many memories tied to that album.
- Inferno (I didn’t think Boards of Canada had anywhere thematically to go, it’s fucking amazing, and still has the SH-101, will be ranked higher in the years to come as new memories are formed with this as my soundtrack… going to Temple of the Way of Light in Peru for 6 ayahuasca sessions in 12 days in a couple of months and Inferno will pretty much be playing after I’ve puked my guts up)
-Random 35 Track Tape (Track B09 is just pure benevolence, and it’s just pure unadulterated creation from two guys who haven’t quite yet mastered their craft, so glad this one got leaked)
Least favorite: Tomorrow’s Harvest (The underlying theme of nihilism never agreed with me, and I completely understand where they’re coming from, we’re headed towards collapse…
I’ve just always kind of lived life according to a letter my mother left me after dying of cancer and seeing me struggle with depression and nihilism:
"You are the universe dreaming itself into a person. For this brief, impossible moment, you exist. You have a body. You have eyes. You have a heart. You can feel. You can connect. You can cry. You can laugh until your face crinkles. You can stop strangers and show them the sky. And this dream is going to end. Don't waste it numbed out. Don't waste it scrolling. Don't waste it in a fortress. There's a beautiful fucking war happening, and we need you on the side of aliveness, of vibrancy, of grace, of the secret frequency. Wake up. Look closer. See it. Join it. HURRY."
Sorry this was unnecessarily long, I got carried away!

Re: Your top 4 BoC releases now that Inferno is out
Wow, thank you so much for sharing that. I know that must be a bit of a vulnerable thing to put out there, but it's an impactful message and I appreciate it.
I can see how the nihilistic edge to Tomorrow's Harvest might be off-putting, but I think that one of the strengths of Boards of Canada's music is that none of it is a one-note message. Nihilistic though TH may appear in some ways, there's such beauty to some of it. Even in the dreadful parts.
I believe its handling of nihilism is less an assertion that nothing matters than it is a hard look at what happens when a society succumbs to that mindset.

The anecdote about your mom is incredible, but are you sure you wanna do that ayahuasca binge? Sounds like one of those "bad ideas"...In Technicolor wrote:going to Temple of the Way of Light in Peru for 6 ayahuasca sessions in 12 days in a couple of months and Inferno will pretty much be playing after I’ve puked my guts up)

Re: Your top 4 BoC releases now that Inferno is out
I agree that the 1996 releases have enough material for an hypothetical predecessor to MHTRTC, but I disagree, I don't see the 1998 album as a mixtape and the tracklist is basically perfect.Negamuse wrote:I've always felt the same about MHTRTC tbh. Having Rue the Whirl without Aquarius after without Olson after? I say no.

Hard to decide, I love all their albums, plus IABP is up there. Blows me away they can put out yet another 10/10 masterpiece after so long.
