Pretty sure I’ve read in interviews each of them have distinct roles with a bit of cross over.

One is more in to the melody side the other is deep in to the production side but each do a bit of both.

If you’re coming up with the tune and playing the instruments, you would be credited as song writer.

If the other brother is finessing the hell out of it, he wouldn’t necessarily be credited as writer but would be equally putting a large amount of effort in to it.

It would still be collaborative with each likely putting in an equal amount of effort.

Here's my pitch on why they did the credits this way, if it wasn't just a random decision. This is ALL SPECULATION

Mike wants to move into movie soundtracks and Marcus doesn't.

The last two albums have been soundtracky as hell, so we know they are interested in making stuff that sounds like it's a soundtrack at least.

A lot of bands have solo members go off and score films. But they're usually more well known names, and Boards have spent much of their career only visible as the combination of both of them under that band name. Maybe there's a bit of a sense that if you're going to want a Boards soundtrack you need them both for it to sound a way.

But splitting the credits says "hey we can make this kind of music and by the way, if it were just me doing it, it's still possible for it to sound like these tracks, specifically"

IMO, maybe it’s Marcus who wants to do soundtracks and Mike wants to keep BOC “pure”. Maybe we’ll get some Marcus OSTs soon, although TBH I hope they don’t. The first few Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross soundtracks were interesting, but now there’s so many of them and they are so boring. The NIN Tron Ares soundtrack is going to be forever associated with Jared Leto. They really watered down their “brand” bleurgghh

dropping a line to say: in 2026, a year of maximum nonprivacy, it'is more impressive than ever that we'are reduced to more and/or mere baseless speculation w/r/t what these production credits mean. i.e.: they allegedly have children (who are likely in their late teens/early twenties ? [socialmedia age]), partners, are part of a farflung community, etc., and yet: their standard for privacy is so high that none'of us really know shit about their lives. I love it.

Sorry for beating a dead horse with this, but it irks me more than it should that people immeadiately jump at the negative "conclusions" for why Marcus seems to have a lesser role on this album. Granted I don't know if theres truly a difference when the main album says "(everything)written by Mike" and the ASCAP listing lists tracks that also have writing credits by Marcus. But I simply think it boils down to the strength of the matieral. Like...lets just imagine they have each writen their own demos and then later get together to say "heres what we're working with for this album" and maybe Marcus' just didn't quite fit. not necessarily because of quality but BOC albums have a thread going through the album so if a certain track doesn't work in context its not going to be included even if the track itself is amazing.

When they said they have hundreds and hundreds of songs or snippets or parts unused and unreleased wouldn't it be funny if it was like 98% of it is Marcus because he's the techie and his stuff is all over the place and doesn't always quite fit?
