09. Memory Death

Grew to be one of my favs on the record. Certain sections remind me of Opening the Mouth. Hauntingly beautiful track, future classic for sure.

It feels as if we are listening to someone dying. Right in the middle of the album. Then we are being reborn in The Word Becomes Flesh. So, do we die twice in this album?

For me it's one of the most impactful songs on the album. My mind instantly linked it to a literal memory death and near-death experience. Having experienced the latter, for me, it's very similar to the feeling you get as you lie there accepting you are dying in that moment. The otherworldly voice sounding like it's pleading saying "please..." brings me to tears every time. Incredibly powerful track. It's length is perfect as well. It's all just so fleeting.

I see Acts of Magic as the initial moment the soul is revived from death and reincarnated. Memory Death is the wiping of the memory of the previous life before full reincarnation, then the Word Becomes Flesh is the moment of physical reincarnation.

It occurred to me to share that this track reminds me of a very matured and richly mastered version of what the artist Sangam is doing. I like Sangam, but man, hearing the same degree of production/mastering on his work as Memory Death would really elevate it a lot.

I am currently reading a book by a Buddhist monk and in it he talks about that in order to start a new day we have to die the day before that, in order to kill the memories that came from the day before. Maybe that also ties into the title of "memory death"

I was thinking along similar lines with this track actually. In Buddhist terms, we are born and die in every single moment. (So we don't have to think of past lives as literal past lives; it can just be earlier versions of ourselves in this life)

Another layer to consider: in Dante's Divine Comedy, the waters at the base of Purgatorio wash away memories of sin for those that enter and before they climb. If we think of the concept of sin more broadly, it could be seen as an extreme connection to something that isn't real / isn't a real manifestation of divine love, eg, photographs, memories, etc. Stuff you have to let go of in order to be reborn to and to be open to the present moment.

Inferno's reference to the Divine Comedy probably has a lot of rich layers to it that someone else would be way better equipped to unpack than me.

I dunno why but I was imagining it as the death that awaits you when nobody remembers you, as in this quote

The fact this is tracked AFTER "Somewhere Right Now In The Future" only adds to that suspicion.

Last night whilst listening I noticed there’s a deep musical connection between this track and Reach for the Dead. Makes sense, as both feature “Dead / Death” in the title.

The bass line for both tracks share the same 3 descending notes - Eb - Db - B. And in the same key as well. Whilst RFTD has a more extended chord progression, but this fundamental 3 note idea is exactly the same. And the notes progress at a very similar tempo.

they do notoriously love descending a root tone down to a flat 6 (here, B would be the flattened 6 of what would normally be the 6th note in the Eb scale, C )

Kids do a lot of interesting things that you kind of vaguely remember doing yourself but have shutoff as an adult. You start to realize that life doesn't have to be about being completly conscious of the universe's problems. It can be really fulfilling if you just concentrate on a little microscopic version of life that a child sees. As a parent you have no choice but to occasionally lose yourself in a child's world like The Jungle Book of something. It's a bit like what we do with our music. It's like saying to yourself that just for this hour I'm gonna switch off all the crap in the world and lose myself in an alternative world. Like a good book or something. It's kind of how we see what we do with our records. Although it's becoming increasingly difficult the older we get. It's much harder to not put our political beliefs into the music."

Marcus: "I think perhaps the theme of what we're doing is instead of looking forward we are looking backward to the positivity that you might have had as a child. And we want to take it as a fuel and be inspired by it. I think of myself as the kind of person that even when I'm 80 I'll still be listening to weird music and playing computer games. I don't want to be the kind of person that gives up on youth."

Does anyone have any guesses as to what the stretched-out voice is saying? To me it kinda sounds like 'please breathe' and the whole vibe with the heart monitor is like someone coming out of a coma.

I hear "Release me, please." x2 in the long drawn out sounds.
