Aesthetics; drop whatever you are doing, go to your local record store, get Mbv ''Loveless" and Slowdive "Souvlaki", they will change your life.Aesthetics wrote:Hey Danny!
Nice to catch you here dude
I never heard My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive so I don't know if they sound alike. What I do know is that BoC is influenced by their album art... or at least it looks like it.

BoC mentioned the influence themselves in the Pitchfork interview. i think youll find find that for a musician to be a decent musician they have to be influenced by someone or something. but i always though their (BoC) main influence were the educational board of canada films. i used to watch them in class on film projectors with the wonky, muffled sound coming from the crap mono speaker while the projector rattled away like some toy machine gun. i think thats why boards of canada reminds me of the early 80's when i was a child and why i like them so much. its the closest i can get to time travel.

It makes me laugh when the Pitchfork interviewer says that TCH reminds him of My Bloody Valentine_Loveless,one of my favourite albums to from 1991 on Creation Records, defenitely something wrong with his ears.gfresh wrote:BoC mentioned the influence themselves in the Pitchfork interview. I find it difficult to believe that Mike from BOC said that in the interviewgfresh wrote:BoC mentioned the influence themselves in the Pitchfork interview. Re: influences
i guess if your truly original, the idea is to make music that doesnt sound like your influences but is still related in some form.D4VERD4NN wrote:Some members here say that BOC is influenced by My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive,i wonder where they get that idea from?I have all the records from those 2 bands, and i never made that connection as there's a link to BOC and them.
I think anyone who makes music/art is horrified and frustrated when someone blabs 'that sounds like...or looks like..."
whats the point of doing something verbathim...

old topic reborn. OK, we all like BOC for, among other things, the way the music makes us feel. Do we like it because of it's "genre"? No. "So it follows.." that Mike and Marcus maybe very influenced by the way Kevin's (MBV) music made them feel or think. As addicted to sound as Mike and Marcus are they could be influenced by this purely for layers of sound that MBV make. I think that BOC's real talent is in there manipulation of sound and it is definetly what sets them apart from their piers. So I think like most artists all influences are more on a subconcious level. I actually think they say that somewhere in an interview. In life we go through little births and deaths every instance and sometimes these events manifest themselves in our art before we are even conscious of there effect on us.

In the french magazine Les Inrockuptibles, they explained that the influences for The Campfire Headphase were mostly early 70's music: Joni Mitchell, James Taylor and Neil Young (and that they also like Will Oldham, the Buzzcoks... and Michel Polnaref - no joke).
"Désormais, le monde est bien plus sombre encore qu'auparavant. Il est plus incertain, plus chaotique. Ce nouevl album a été un moyen non pas de refléter ça, mais plutôt de l'ignorer, de s'en échapper: une tentative d'évasion. Nous avons tenté de nous en isoler, d'ignorer l'extérieur pour revenir à des temps plus naïfs. Ce nouvel album est plus pop et nous avons surtout voulu le construire comme une sorte de road movie." (www.lesinrocks.com)
Rough translation: the world gets darker and uncertain since 9-11, The campfire Headphase is an attempt to escape from that reality, to go back to more "naive" times (ingenuous, artless), and is built like a road movie. Far far away from Slowdive or My Bloody Valentime.

Full translation:
Henceforth, the world is well darker again than beforehand. It is more uncertain, more chaotic. This nouevl album was a means not to reflect that, but rather to be unaware of it, of about it to escape: an escape attempt. We attempted us some to isolate, to be unaware of the exterior one to come back to more naïve times. This new album is more pop and we especially wanted to construct it as a sort of road movie
