Albums creating actual places in your mind.

Now I find that really good albums take you to a sort of place you can explore. Not just imagery, but a real place, a building, a town, a beautiful place out in the country...

I find Aphex Twin's album Drukqs puts me in a strange claustrophobic, yet comfortable building, with light brown walls. Its kind of like an old concert hall, but its all dusty and theres weird decaying mechanical instruments lying around.

Tool's album Lateralus makes me feel so at home. I feel like I'm in some sort of mountainous landscape, its lightly snowing, and I have a little hut on a hill. Its hard to identify quite what it makes me feel like though.

Tool's album Undertow makes me think of some sort of dirty, smelly pit, where there are a a small amount of people fighting to survive. They will kill their own brother to survive.

I have tons more, but I'm having trouble describing in words whats its like.

What kind of albums make you get those feelings?

IABPOITC..and Geogaddi. Also Kid A by Radiohead...plus a few Neil Young albums, like Tonight's the Night.

The first time i listened to autechre's confield all the way through, i really felt like it was less of an album and more of a place. it was weird, like an icy, mechanical place in the future.

"isn't anything" by mbv always reminds me of this time i was stranded in binghamton, and my friends drove 5 hours to come get me. we ended up staying there for a while, driving around in the mountains and listening to that. so yeah, "isn't anything" puts me in the backseat of a dodge neon driving around in the woods.

What i love about boc is that the imagery you get from their songs always agrees with the ones they aim to depict on albums(from what ive read in interviews). I love how intelligent their music is because it sends you the image without blatantly doing so. The landscapes you get can also have different feelings or atmospheres that cant be communicated using language. They take advantge or synesthesia and our conditioned minds, i truly respect anyone who can do that.

For me its not landscapes as much as different emotions or atmospheres ive felt through my life that are conjured up by music.

confield is the only autechre release that I don't really 'get'... at least not yet. MCR quarter is pretty banging though
