Cannibal Holocaust (and the BoC link)

A New York anthropologist, named Professor Harold Moore (Robert Kerman), travels to the wild, inhospitable jungles of South American with two local guides to find out what happened to a documentary film crew which disappeared nearly a year earlier while traveling into the same jungle, called the 'Green Inferno' to film a documentary about reputed cannibal tribes. After a long search and encountering a few primitive tribes, Professor Moore finds the remains of the crew and several reels of their undeveloped film. Upon returning to the USA, Professor Moore views the film in detail featuring the travels of the director Alan Yates (Gabriel York), his assistant Faye Daniels (Francesa Ciardi), and cameramen Jack Anders (Perry Pirkanen) and Mark Tomaso (Luca Giorgio Barbareschi) venturing into the jungles where the inexperienced, street-wise film group, after finding the indigenous tribes to docile for their film, decide to push them for kicks, with drastic consequences.

Somehow, this is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen.

Before I discovered Boards Of Canada, I already always had a special feeling when I saw 70's TV footage, or saw documentaries on National Geographic, or when I listened to good psychedelic music from the sixties. BoC confirmed and strengthened that feeling. But there were other things that gave me the 'BoC' feeling before I ever listened to the band, among those were cases of murder from the 70's and 80's I saw on the Discovery Channel when I was a kid. It always gave me such a sad and uncanny feeling.

Cannibal Holocaust is for me thus far the absolute confirmation of this particular feeling. Such sad things happen in this movie, such as the girl impaled on a pole as some of you might know.

There are several songs on the soundtrack of this film, composed by Riz Ortolani, which make it for me one of the most beautiful movie soundtracks ever. These are atleast the song "Crucified Woman" which is played while the said girl on a stick is shown and the main theme. I strongly advice you to check it out. It is sad and romantic in strange way.

i believe the original poster was referring more to the vibe of the film as a low budget old movie. its hard to put into words but i agree on its intrigue; there is something about films like this and other 70s shock/exploitation cinema that is both repulsive and (perhaps psychedelically) intriguing to me

Seven animals were killed during the film's production, and six of the deaths are seen onscreen:
A large, screaming coatimundi (mistaken as a muskrat in the film) is stabbed multiple times in the neck by an actor.
A large turtle (about three feet long) is captured in the water and dragged to shore, where it is then decapitated and its limbs and shell removed. The actors proceed to cook and eat the turtle.
A large spider is killed with a machete.
A snake is killed with a machete.
A squirrel monkey has its face cut off with a machete.
A pig is kicked and then shot with a rifle.

One of the most disgusting movies i've seen so far.

I'd heard of this movie, and until now was kind of interested in seeing it, but I'm not down with killing helpless animals for the sake of a movie. I'm not some hippie, but I don't really need to see a live animal getting stabbed and shit.

I remember seeing this (the directors cut edition) and found it very hard to stomach, I defiantly see the BoC resemblance, After watching it I went straight on the net to hunt down the soundtrack.

Yup! Also known as Dr. Butcher MD! Classic, fucked up, B-grade 70's mayhem!

I have yet to see Cannibal Holocaust, but have been meaning to check it out for a few years now. There's something about the atmosphere of 70's low-budget movies like that that draws me to them. The way they were filmed, how they sound and look, is very surreal to me. Very dream like, and I like that about them... particularly the horror and exploitation genres.

One of the best Exploitation movies I have seen. I watched it in a double bill with Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Don't approve of the animal killing but it sure does help get you in the mood.
Apocalypse Now has real animal slaughter in it. So there.

You don't aprove of the animal slaughter in Cannibal Holocaust, and you say that Apocalipse Now has 'real' animal slaughter? So what's your point?
