Do you share BOC?

All my friends find boc too weird...bastards. I only know a few people who truly enjoy them..I try and tell people about them whenever I can though..spread the loveeee

I don't really know anyone who has much knowledge of the electronic stuff I listen to. My girlfriend doesn't mind it (she thinks most of the other electronic stuff I listen to is annoying). I did once put IABPOITC on in the car during a trip with some friends in college, went over fairly well.

I have three friends, who i introduced boc too. Of them, one likes radiohead alot and stuff, and "indie" music, she's not too crazy about boc. The other two listen to boc while smoking and riding, and i went with them, we heard tch. I was in the backseat, breaking down while stbd was, and others. My point is, nobody I know is into boc to the extent i am. I wish i knew one person, it would be nice to share. But i dont mind.

I initiated Boards of Canada to two of my friends. They both loved them, although it was a total failure for a few more people.

a good majority of my close friends are into boards, as well as a good amount of aquaintances. my ladyfriend loves em, and one of my university profs is a longtime fan as well. id say they fairly commonly liked wihtin their genre.

My 4 other friends all love BOC but none of them are totally into them like me and then whenever anyone asks me my favorite bands its like "BOC, Dj Shadow, Aphex Twin, My Bloody Valentine" and its always "Who's that???". its very dissapointing that people arent into really sweet music or maybe im just a sucker for electronic music that i can bob my head up and down to and trip out like crazy to. Really the only band that people know that I know is TOOl but then they are like dude 10,000 days and 10,000 days is sweet but it in no way compares to the old stuff. I wonder if BOC, and it doesnt matter if they ever do or not and I would almost rather have them not, will ever get extremely popular.

i dont understand why popular music is, well, so popular? its very simplistic, has little or no meaning, in being that the lyrics are shallow. now im not saying that about all popular music. i have a soft spot for bands like the killers and stuff, but pussycat dolls and shit like that, i will never understand. i love the pure emotion of music like BoC, tycho, FSOL, ciaran byrne and lately, epic45 etc. etc. . a melody, such as in groups (right word?) like these, say much more than most of the shit i hear on the radio. i dont understand society as a whole. nevermind why people listen to such rubbish.

i dont even think this has anything to do with one's intelligence. it could be due to artistic inclination, a true ear for beauty, or perhaps even a disillusion with society in general. perhaps its all of those for me. i know that people dont just listen to music like this because its "underground". there is something more to it.

i hope im not sounding like im up my own ass.

My friends just think I'm weird about Boards. They don't not like it, but they don't go buy their music or explore it more then with me. I made the mistake of trying to explain the Red Moon code shenanigans to my close friends and they thought i and you guys were crazy

Then again, I'm pushing a few people...I was in charge of a trip playlist... and lets just say they are converting

maybe if people actually shared it with their FRIENDendest friends it would work. Think of it this way. You have a friend who is like your second self. You find out about BoC, then you relay the info to your friend, and since you are so similar and like eachother, your friend likes BoC because it reflects your own personality.

Like, if someone really likes everything about me, then they may like BoC too. Thats how it went with my friend. We both love BoC close to equal.

I can't say that I agree with the sentiment expressed by many Twoismers about society and music.

Having been a huge music snob at one point in my life AND a shallow pop-music listener, I would conjecture that it has more to do with how much intellectual emphasis one chooses to place on the music, and less to do with an 'ear for good music' or a higher IQ. For instance, when I am listening to some dumb catchy pop song in my car, I am not thinking, "This is the music that I choose to represent myself with. I identify with it because it is masterfully crafted and supports the virtues I support." All that I am choosing to say is "I dig this." In other words: my virtues stand on their own. The quality of my character, my interests, my philosophy do not need musical representation and I don't need to broadcast them in order for them to be valid. I don't see the need in evaluating a person in the context of the noise they choose to surround themselves with. It seems a socially impatient and immature thing to do.

My view is that music serves any purpose you can find for it. One does not have to treat the music like a closely-guarded intellectual colleague if one does not wish to - one can merely treat it like pleasant background noise, and the use is equally valid. You may think a person vacant, or their choices asinine, but the way they use their music does not necessarily reflect the quality of their character or intelligence, because they may not be playing their music with that intent.

fucking agreed. it seems like a lot of people go through a period where they are trying to find their identity, but sometimes the easiest way to express who you are is by latching on to some "scene." that could be the christian scene, the music scene, the school scene, or any other "scene." In doing so, you pretty much obliterate your chances of ever having anything remotely resembling your own "identity," and spend a lot of the time trying to figure out how to better fit in with whatever group you are using to define your perspectives. i went through a period of being a really pretentious snob about music too. i ended up getting really tired of it, and realizing that i don't want people to immediately be able to identify who i am by what i'm wearing or what i listen to. i don't think those things define me as a person, but at the same time everything you do defines who you are. however, i'd rather make a more subtle statement with how i choose to dress myself. i think if you seem more ambiguous with your appearance people will less likely immediately associate you with a particular scene. recently, i decided to quit wearing band shirts, shirts with obvious branding or messages. I'd rather my statements be made in different ways, rather than by having a bumper sticker/t-shirt ideology. as it turns out, all of those "scenes," are just as dogmatic and insular as religions. I don't want to have to check what i say, think, or do just to make sure it fits in or doesn't offend the people i'm "supposed" to agree with.

sorry everybody i'm ranting at this point, but i've actually been talking to a lot of my friends about this exact thing for the last couple of weeks.

i do share boc with my friends who i think are open-minded enough to appreciate it for what it is, and for the most part that's worked out really well. i play them a lot at the coffee shop i work at, because it doesn't seem to offend anyone. a lot of people end up asking about it.
