Derail is not kidding about this one. Picture the pop sensibility of MBV channeled through Seefeel with a touch Slowdive and an occasional glaze of the Cocteau Twins.

Is there anyone else that absolutely loves "Loveless" but that puts it on sometimes after listening to other music and just finds themselves shocked by how poor the recording quality is?

I just bought the 33 1/3 book about Loveless and as I was flipping through (I have yet to read) noticed that a lot of it was recorded in MONO!!?

What!?

I don't know what remastering could do for the disc, but I wouldn't mind hearing the recording updated a bit. Anyone else felt this at all?

from what i gathered from the book, it's all intentional and that's the way it's supposed to sound, according to Shields. they had a lot of resources available for Loveless.

Like most of Creation Records' budget by all accounts. Loveless nearly bankrupted Creation at the time.

this 'fact' is actually contested in the book by kevin:

"the basic facts were that Creation left rough trade distribution. we started the record with Creation literally being penniless. They weren't bankrupt, because they didn't in fact owe anything. When we finished the record we were no longer homeless and they had like ten bands, with half of them getting into the charts. They were an extremely healthy label. Thats the actual truth."

he goes on to contest the reported 250 thousand pounds by saying it was 160 thousand

yeah i don't mean resources as in money; my point is that they recorded in a lot of studios with a lot of studio professionals available to them, but Kevin just wanted to do it his way. If he'd wanted it to sound more conventional, it would've happened.

I guess it's not really conventionality that is the issue for me. It's just that, from a production values standpoint, it sounds remarkably bad compared to other recordings of the same period. That's all - I still listen to it all the time. I was just shocked the other day when I had some MBV on a playlist with some other songs how comparatively crappy it sounded.

Cheers for this. I'll have to read the 33&1/3 book. There seems to be a lot of bad feeling still between Kevin Shields and Alan McGee, judging by some of McGee's recent digs at Shields (some of which I've posted here). For some reason Alan McGee has started completely dismissing Shields/MBV's talent in various articles. Which is a bit strange as in the past he's gone on record as calling Kevin Shields a genius and hailing Loveless as one of Creation's greatest releases. And when Mogwai (who are/were managed by McGee) released Mr Beast he called it "the best art-rock album since Loveless".

Thread revival! About time this was pulled out from the back of the drawer I think.

OK, so this isn't strictly shoegaze imo, but was just tidying up the usual eleventy-six ultra-crap MySpace requests when I gave this guy, Dead Mellotron, a chance. Really I glad I did - something about him just reminds of MBV, Lush, Swervedriver, etc, etc. Strong tunes, a nice lightly warped sound, vocals that sound like they were recorded circa 1989 somewhere in a metal silo or something. Some nice electronic elements on some tracks too, although often kept in the background.

A free 8 song EP to downloadtoo, and it's well worth it. Check the track I Hate The Way Things Are in particular.

I've been listening to Spacemen 3 a lot this evening, specifically Spacemen 3 - Live @ Wilhelm 1, Arnhem, Holland - 13th April 1989 [FULL SET], as well as some other shoegaze-y bands. I'm really liking this genre/sound.

I have a DVDR of Ride's performance at the Brixton Academy in 1992 which I guess I should watch now that I am discovering that I actually like this genre.
