A MHTRTC Social Experiment

Today I was in German Class, and there was a sub. We were gonna just work loosely on a group project the whole class, so she wanted to listen to some music on a huge bassy boombox sitting around, but there wasn't any good music. So I said "Hey I have some music!" and so she put it in while we were working.

I'll describe the reactions of people as the album progressed.

Wildlife Analysis: Nobody seemed to really notice much, but they seemed a bit confused that nothing had really started.

Eagle: People still seemed a bit confused in the beginning, but then as the track went on people started to get comfortable with it. One dude who I know really likes Trip-Hop was gettin' into it as the hip-hop beat came in.

Color of Fire: This one girl was laughed in a weird-ed out way from it.

Telephasic Workshop: Nobody seemed to mind it, kinda just came and went.

Triangles and Rhombuses: just lulled people into a sense that nothing was coming.

Sixtyten: A bunch of people were looking at me with weird looks when the eerie beginning of this song turned into that sick beat. Once again the Trip-Hop dude was lovin' it.

Turquoise Hexagon Sun: Everyone pretty much enjoyed this track...I went to the Trip-Hop guy and told him it was Boards of Canada and he asked which album, and he said he only had Dayvan Cowboy, but he really was finding the music great.

Kaini & Bocuma: During Kaini the teacher told me it sounds somewhat native american to which I responded with imformation about Kaini Industries and Pete Standing alone and such...

Roygbiv: Everyone loved this track!! The Trip-Hop guy started dancing and this one other kid said this is fun music.

Rue the Whirl: This one snooty kid was muttering to himself about "the annoying beat" Trip-Hop man loved it though.

Aquarius: This one was really funny. This girl remarked about how this music is like music to lsiten to when you are on shrooms, and she basically started paying more attention to the music. After awhile she went up and skipped it in mid-song. I don't quite know why.

Olson: I turned this real loud because one kid exclaimed "I LOVE THIS SONG!!!" It started to fade away and he was like "Aww man, wheres my song?"

Pete Standing Alone: Everyone was pleasantly decieved by the wispy beginning. The volume was still really loud. I went over to the trip-hop dude and was like "Watch this" The beat pounded on with huge force and it was just awesome. But someone said, "Can we skip this?" and i said okay.

Smokes Quantity: Everyone was kind of disturbed by the melody for some reason...

Open the Light: The same kid who loved Olson was like "YEAH THIS IS ALSO MY SONG!!!"

One Very Important Thought: I went over before this started and turned it way up. Everyone was kind of like WTF, but most of the people listened to what the voice was saying. The teacher was very interested.

Happy Cycling: This one kid asked me if I liked Shpongle, and I said yeah, and we talked a bit about it. He also said he would like to know more about BoC. This other kid who seemed a bit annoyed by the music asked the teacher, "What kind of music is this anyways?" and she told him to ask me, and I just said "Well, I guess you could say its kind of a mix between Trip-Hop, Ambient music, and Electronic music." He was like "Oh so this is music to listen to when you are trippin, haha." I pointed out to a couple people right before the ORGASMIC melody came on, that it was the best melody ever conceived by man.

As Happy Cycling decayed I got more questions about BoC, it was fun to tell people.

The whole class I had goosebumps and was slightly shaking....a bit of a downside......but thats what BoC does to me!

I had MHTRTC played in maths class one day.

Nobody liked it except the gay guy who sat behind me. "It's nice. It just sorta exists in the background without being in your face."

Oh and the bearded guy in front of me. "It's well good."

I like how people across the pond say "maths". I wonder why it became plural over there. Or why it became singular over here, however you want to look at it.

I find sometimes science teachers either like Boards of Canada immdiately, or they act like they've herad it before...

Sweet experiment man..I find it interesting how some kid remarked on Olson and Open the Light...I've always drawn some kinda connection between them, love those tracks

awesome. i love it when you've got great music you want to share, and everyone is getting into it. that feeling is amazing. it's cool that people were digging it and asking about it. i always try to do that with my friends, but math class?? what a trip! i wish i could do that.

Cool that you had the guts to play them MHTRTC. I expected that you were getting more negative replies... you should indeed try Geogaddi next time. I bet you won't make it to the end of the record!

I wasn't the first time i've played BoC in a class. I once played TCH in a class and everyone pretty much enjoyed it.

I once gave a copy of Geogaddi to a science teacher and he played it while we were working on several occasions.

I wonder if a math or science documentary has ever used BOC for a soundtrack?

I bet you'd hardly make it through Music is Math before people would start screaming that it's creeping them out!
