I used to live in a larger city in Pennsylvania, and seriously, some of the people who liked underground hip-hop liked BoC when I played it for them!

Ok, I tried Shpongle.
Comparing them to BoC is about as meaningful as comparing Shania Twain to BoC. Seriously.

Not to mention "Shpongle" is one of the worst band names out there.

I used to live in a larger city in Pennsylvania, and seriously, some of the people who liked underground hip-hop liked BoC when I played it for them!

I could see twoism as an instrumental album to which people flow to. Except the flowing would not be about bitches and dro, but rather about plants and the hardships of life.

Shpongle is fucking amazing. they are completely different than BoC and cannot be compared at all in that shpongle's music is an outgrowth of psytrance and world music while BoC's music is an outgrowth of IDM, Ambient techno, 8-bit NES music, found sound avant-garde and 70s movie soundtracks. What both have in common, though, is the ability to completely transport the listener...to erase the ego with a palpable but undefined "magic" that is certainly there in their music, and that exists in all the great music artists of our time.

You know what's so great about this thread? It's that the same person who showed all these people the greatness of BoC is the same one who said -

It's because theres a difference between liking a band, and listening to it to seem more sophisticated. I love when people 'like my band' but I don't when the music is only a tool for status among snobby quasi-intellectuals...

Come on, it's not like BoC aren't a rather well-known and popular band. Plus everyone born before 1990 is bound to get some of the references. I'd say they're a band that grows on you.

And they make hip-hop beats better than quite a few hip-hop artists.

Well, you run into a number of problems with BoC (and I would argue electronica in general):

1) I have known a lot of people in my life who simply cannot wrap their head around instrumental music. Whether it's Mozart or Mogwai or John Coltrane or Aphex Twin, they categorically don't understand/can't get into it.

Some people simply need that immediate human presence in their music- and that's OK.

2) A lot of people take comfort in Democracy. They figure that songs that make it to the top in MTV and the American Radio are there by power of numbers, and that therefore they are safe in saying that it is cool and meaningful.

Vis-à-vis a conversation I had with a kid from work about how I thought hip-hop last summer was unusually wank, even by hip hop's now very conservative standards. He got mad and said "Yeah, BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE LIKE IT!!"

Apparently, I had violated his democratic sensibilities.

And unfortunately, electronic music in general is a niche market made up by nerds/deviants like us who mostly communicate about it online because we don't personally know a lot of people who get it in our 'real' lives.

But I wouldn't have it any other way, honestly. With one exception- I'd like a girl with a mind open to the idea- but other than that, I don't care what they think (or listen to, for that matter)

You know disavowed, I would not have it any other way either. Alas, ONE person that gets them would be nice, haha. Here in the US, this sort of music just doesnt apply, if you get what Im saying. I believe that I have a better chance of meeting a BoC (or other) fan in El Salvador, my home country, than here. But it is nice in a way, this solitude with the music, sometimes.

Me and a friend were talking about music with words and how it forces an emotion on you through communication but with instrumental music you have to go into the music and kind of let your mind create its own.

That is exactly how I feel.
I feel that music with lyrics is like going to watch the movie, while music without is like reading the actual book.
That is why I dislike music with lyrics, you are being told what is happening, you are being told the emotions, the feelings, I mean, its still subjective and all, but music without lyrics is just your mind.
I guess some people just rather have that humanizing aspect.
Me, I want to go to other worlds, haha. (hungover).

i just introduced my girlfriend to boc tonight. it was hard to do to be real honest. what if she hated it? i guess i'm just not open to sharing my musical tastes to many people for fear of their misunderstanding...anyway, i played olson first followed by everything you do is a balloon and i'm not kidding, she had tears in her eyes. i like where this is going...

i played Boards of Canada's remix of Beck's Broken Drum for my journalism class. None of them reponded except a Vietnam vet (i'm at a huge state school) who was extremely enthusiastic. "Love those synthesizers in there" he said, and I wrote down "Boards of canada" on a sheet of paper and handed it to him.

The only time I play BoC for my wife is when we're on a road trip, or at least a drive over an hour long. She loves it when I put them in b/c it helps her relax and eventually fall asleep. Normally that would be a bad thing, but when you're stuck in my little Mazda 3 for many hours, a nap is welcome. Campfire Headphase always works, and is great for me b/c that album is perfect when driving through rural areas where no one is around for miles (which we get a lot of in Texas).
