Young Master Cupz (

) turned me on to this record and I absolutely love it. It's not very experimental- I mean, it sounds exactly how you would think a record with Harold Budd and the Cocteau Twins would sound- but it is so UNCOMMONLY BEAUTIFUL that I think it's worth a mention here. D/L and/or buy at will.

Sooo many good artists found this year (not necessarily from this year..)

- Hiromi's Sonicbloom - "Time Control" (if you are a musician this is particularly rewarding)
- Everything by Iron and Wine, particularly "The Creek Drank the Cradle"
- Pinback's "Blue Screen Life"
- Sigur Ros's very recent "Hvarf/Heim"
- Owen
- Hopesfall's "Magnetic North", not a perfect CD as a whole, but has unbelieveably redeeming moments and some nice lyrics

And if you enjoy angry metalcore, grindcore, deathcore, blahblahblahcore (I wonder if anyone here listens to any of the following?) here are my favorites, mostly from this year:

- The Devil Wears Prada, "Plagues"
- August Burns Red, "Messengers"
- Emmure's "Goodbye to the Gallows" (in the scene here, you're almost considered a sellout for loving these guys.. but.. it's so damn catchy)
- The Acacia Strain's "The Dead Walk" - Possibly the angriest, dirtiest thing ever
- Ion Dissonance's "Minus the Herd" - Completely relentless, brutal, and weird time signatures
- Suicide Silence's "The Cleansing" - Fuck
- Vanna's "Curses" - The most accessible yet underappreciated CD on this list. Definitely worth a spin.

I hope none of you hate me for this list, haha. Let me know if you've heard anything from it!

My favorite discoveries have been things from the 60s and 70s like Gong, Incredible String Band, and Silver Apples. They excerpt some almost childlike innocence with their lyrics when it comes to looking at life. I don't hear many bands that feel as free to me as them. BOC encompasses their influence with sound, but without lyrics it's more subtle.

lots of good stuff! really got into autechre... boxcutter.. squarepusher... much more into aphex than before too... sunn o))) (kind of out of place) ... and more recently tetsu inoue.
