What makes you do the things you do?

Post by iwishimademovies »

That is, why do you get up in the morning? What is it about this world that we feel compelled to put our pants (or take them off) everyday?

I'm not asking so much about the "meaning of life" but the miniscule things that add up to your reality.

I've been thinking about this lately, it helps when "The Field" is on the ipod.

The knowledge that I know I will learn; I know I will laugh; I know I will hear a song that I love -

basically the thirst to enjoy life, to learn more about myself and about others and about the world in which we live.

What about you? :P

I get up for all kinds of things. My cup of coffee in the morning is what motivates me at first open eye though. 8)

I don't know..sometimes I just want to sleep and dream all day. Music is my main motivation I suppose, and friends...

A while ago I didn't have any reason, and I really acted that way. [Emo] I just listened to music all day long and when the day was over cry myself to sleep [/Emo]

Now I found some (read: Just a little) love in my life, I still do it,but on a lower rate.

zeitgeist - i'm from the midwest as well

if you're asking what gets me up in the morning quite literally, it's more often than not a terrible nightmare and occasionally a night terror/succubus that gets me up and running. i get out of bed in the morning because the bed is the place where my dreams go to hell - i want to be away from it by the time i'm done using it for a night, lol. i am one of those people who just never, ever, ever has a good dream.

if you're not asking what literally gets me out of bed in the morning, which is what i suspect, you'll have to clarify your question a bit in order for me to form an answer. i see that you're driving at something and i think i'm in the same mental ballpark but i can't really give an accurate response the way you phrased it. so...thur ya go.

edit: let me expand on that, actually. if the question is "what do you feel gives your life meaning", well, i don't. this is because i don't understand meaning as a thing which swoops into a person's life where it wasn't before, nor is it something that a person either does or doesn't possess as a predicate - "John has a life which he lives and John's life has meaning in it" doesn't make sense to me. my position is that the response to "what gives your life meaning?" is "that's a silly question." i guess my bottom line is that the notion of saying life can have or not have meaning is incoherent to me - it's not something i think we can ever talk about with clear heads. to me, it would be tantamount to asking, "why is your happy green?" i don't have a happy, and it can't be green or not green; happiness doesn't have color. that's about how i understand the question "what makes life meaningful". in more specific terms - "what motivates you to do Action A or Action B", or if we were to ask, "what are the things that you value very much in life" - i think we can get the same type of answers we're looking for from people but with a more accurate question.

Every morning I lay in bed for about 5 minutes debating whether or not I should get up and go to school or to just say the hell with it all. Then I think about my life as it is and how I want it to be better and only by getting up and doing what I have to do will I be able to make it better. I look forward to living in suburbia again. I don't like the city.

to be honest I think a lot of you ought to read my answer and see if it applies to your life too.

i'm afraid i don't quite see it the same way. i'm not the most cynical person ever but i'm also not usually cheery enough to be pondering what good things may happen to me in the day's hours to come.

i just try to enjoy myself really

Don't get me wrong; I'm no crappy optimist - I just know that there's no way I can escape those facts, and am probably lucky that I enjoy them.

Probably the arrogant (and quite possibly baseless) idea that I might be able to change the world for the better somehow. That and bedsores.
