Hey, do any of you here mind sharing some of advice on drum machines? I need something that has lots of drum sounds (doesn't have to be a drum machine, as I will use a sampler to sequence the sounds). Thanks

Sampleswap.org has a bunch of individual acoustic and electronic drum sounds. You have to register, but it's worth it.

Romeda: I'm mostly interested in hardware, cause it's hard for me to get good sounding samples from the computer as of right now. I'll have to check out the site more, but it does have a ton of samples. Thanks for showing me.

Silo Flame: I'm actually looking at getting an MPC, but I still need something for drum samples.

Battery by native instruments is the best one out there by far

Yeah man I'd concur with that. Most of my beats are made in FL then exported into whatever sequencer I please, with the option to expand with added effects etc.

You can probably do everything with fl that you can do with an mpc and its like 700 dollars cheaper. All my beats are also made in fl.

Have any of you tried both, using computers for music, and using hardware? Can you say if there is one better than the other? I know it's really a matter of personal opinion but, I haven't been using computers for anything but recording, but I will probably be getting a new computer in the next month, so using a computer is an option now. But which do all of you prefer?

Id probably go for the mpc if i had the dough.

I had an MPC1000 for about three days and loathed it. But that's just me.. I know it fits in better with other people.

So I guess I'll just say...

606, 707, 808, 909

Hooray!

And a SCI Drumtraks if you like more sampled sounding drums.

Or just get a soft sampler like Battery/Kontakt.

Or an Akai S1000/5000 etc.

Hey how about a Machinedrum?

Ok, in all seriousness it really comes down to what you're most comfortable with when making your music. I usually kick start a a couple of patterns these days and just zone out for a couple of hours while twiddling knobs.

s1000's and 900's etc are really easy to get cheap on ebay; got one for about 40$, though I have previously gotten ones that did not work/broke.

The MPCs have an extreme learning curve. I basically gave up because it was taking away from being able to capture a moment of creativity.

DRS, i'm going to have to check out Battery. Everything Native Instruments releases is quite good. Reaktor plugins are some of the greatest i've ever come across.

Thanks for the input, I'm planning to get an MPC sometime, but I'm still looking for something with drum sounds that I can use. Even if it's a keyboard with sound patches, I don't really want to bring in software though.

I can understand you not wanting to use software, but honestly Battery is fantastic. It has such a huge sound library and is used throughout the industry. The scope of things you can do with it is just amazing.
