David Lynch's "Mulholland Dr." [2001]

I'd like to open this film up for discussion.

I know there's a lot of hardcore Lynch fans on the board...

But I gotta be honest: I think the movie was retarded. It had a lot of the Lynchian qualities I love, but I felt like the narrative didn't hang together very well. I mean, what was up with the address book, and that guy the thug killed, and the sasquatch guy... and what was all that business with the dwarf.. and the mob... and that girl getting the part.

That's not to say that mystery MAKES the movie bad, but unlike Twin Peaks (and even Eraserhead), I never quite felt completely adrift the way I did in Mulholland Drive. And I didn't feel like there were any memorable characters in the same way that there were in Twin Peaks and Eraserhead. I don't know... Thoughts?

It wasn't very endearing, that's for sure.

Wasn't that flick meant to be a television series, but then cut into a movie after the show fell through? As if Lynch's work isn't convoluted and hard to understand enough, this movie just goes to show how that can be taken to a whole new level when he's forced to chop it up into feature length.

I don't like his work. I think he is overrated, PRETENTIOUS and artsy fartsy.

That was a good read man. I feel bad for anyone who sees this movie as their first taste of Lynch. I thought Eraserhead was much more easily digested, and that movie was bizarre. Apparently in order to understand this movie (like Barton Fink) you have to come to the table with an understanding of Holywood itself and its history, not to mention the history and interests of Lynch.

I think that interpretation works pretty well, but that's only because I personally don't have anything to add or quarrel with. Maybe I'll watch it again someday.

Yes, according to the article Fredd-E posted. It was supposed to be an attempt to get Lynch back into a Twin Peaks sort of mode. Apparently the execs balked at the length, so Lynch took the project elsewhere and cut it down into a movie.

In comparison, this movie was a masterpiece compared to the drivel that was Inland Empire. It was the first time in a very long time I stopped watching a movie in the first act. It scarred me for life and I'm currently in therapy dealing with the trauma.

i saw this in the cinema and that girl on girl love scene was HAWT!!! O_O

but seriously, i didnt really get the film. i think thats why i struggle to remember what it was about except for what i just mentioned.

I only ever saw Eraser head once from start to finish. I don't wanna see it again. It's too disturbing. It was too well done.

I thought Mulholland Drive was good. Liked it better than Eraserhead. I love the theater part at the end. He does well, though, to capture core ugliness in the world. The way he artistically expresses it through audio/visual is amazing if not spot on. That movie I haven't seen too much either. Like the ending in Requiem for a Dream, it's difficult to watch when done well cause it's so real. Likewise in Lynch's film's the experience is so real it's difficult to watch due to it's disturbing message.

I want to see a film that is Lynch's style of expression, but a utopia. This is what I want to make short films of myself. Something like the best trip or dream ever, in film.

I need to see this flick. I really liked Inland Empire, as fucked as it was. Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me is probably my fave of his that I've seen, at the moment.

I saw this movie a couple of years ago. The only scene that I can really recall was them in some venue and a woman singing a really beautiful song before dropping dead and the vocals carrying on.

Ya I got some things to work out too before I can get 'er going. Can't wait for things to fall into place for us. There will definitely be some exchange of videos yes, possibly even ideas and see what each other comes up with?

I don't remember that much anymore of Mulholland.. Probably because it is quite complicated, idd!
The one I recently watched was The Straight Story. I analysed just the first 15 minutes, and there's sooo much to quirrel about! (after forwarding it 2 or 3 times)

However this work of Lynch is much easier to understand as it's chronologically ordered etc., there are so many details which have so much information and meaning.. (like every Lynch movie of course)
