Macquarie Ridge every time. Not the biggest fan of Zoetrope :oops:

Macquarie Ridge definitely. It sounds like a more sophisticated version of Zoetrope, more to it, more enjoyable. I'd buy the whole album again just for this song, Japanese one of course

I never heard Macquarie ridge until really recently when I got my paws on the Japanese version. Couldn't believe I'd missed it. It gets my vote over Zoetrope (although IABPOITC is stunning - just got my blue vinyl in the post today! :D)

I can't believe this is even a question.

Macquarie Ridge wins hands down. Zoetrope is nice, but only a simple progression of synths with little development--whereas Macquarie ridge is a luminous, majestic piece of work which builds on itself, layering ever deeper and constructing one of the most beautiful compositions of juxtaposed chordal structures I've ever been witness to...

I don't know... I love 'em both. I might love the minimalism of Zoetrope more though.. when I'm in the mood. Great song for that twilight feeling.

Apples vs. Oranges... Discuss!

I don't find these tunes to be similar at all.

I will say that I've listened to Zeotrope all the way through to the end maybe once or twice. It's probably my least favorite BoC song.

Zoetrope wins for me...I love them both, but the delicate purity, and memories associated with Zoetrope makes it one of my favorite BoC tunes.
Black then White are all I see in my infancy...Red and Yellow then came to me, reachin' out to me, lets me see...

I say that because MR has an actual melody and structure with more than one element, whereas Zeotrope is just a synth being looped for the most part.

Agreed. Zoetrope, though it's good, is more of a filler track and could easily have been formed in an hour or two. Macquarie Ridge, however, obviously had a lot more planning, time and effort involved (thanks Boards).

i dont know...i disagree with saturdayindex above me...i feel like 'macquarie ridge' is formed pretty simply...'zoetrope' has a really nice shimmering quality about it.

Zoetrope filler? My balls. It's like saying half their output is filler, which it clearly isn't. Zoetrope does nothing, more or less, but that's a major part of why it's so good. The chords and key changes are so distinctive and wonderful, and the synth is heavenly.

Macquarie Ridge is okay, but it's nowhere near Zoetrope.
