Hexagon Son, some info please if possible

Me and the lady friend have just bought our first flat and it's a bit on the snug side of things. I was wondering if there are any online or printed publications, articles or ideas on maximising storage and such things in small apartments that stem from Japan? Any ideas?

I'm pretty sure there is but wouldn't know where to start and need some ideas for shelving, storage, vertical spaces etc

I currently reside in a living room of a friend. So I could use some assistance with this as well. And perhaps can put in my two cents. What specifically are you looking to do?

Well. The kitchen it tiny and I cook a lot, the usual rules and plans for a kitchen are out the window with the this one. The front room is not too bad but a weird shape. Looking really for things that impose the least like storage, utilising wall space and that kinda thing. Just been to Muji and there's some nifty gear there but I'm still a bit without the vision to implement anything.

I don't want things to be cramped and cluttered and thought people living in Japan would have plenty of experience of this and some solutions in the form of an interior design website or something along those lines.

Have you tried Ikea? They have lots of those studio apartment/flat storage systems.

Yeh

I've been shopping at stores like Ikea, Muji, Habitat, John Lewis and the like for well over ten years. It's not the gadgets and shops them selves that I need in this situation - it's the throwing it all together competently in a small space

We are going to be living here for at least five years and we don't intend to replace stuff because it was bought on a whim so want to get things right the first time round. All I seem to turn up by Googleing is traditional Japanese interiors or how to decorate your room to make it look Oriental ... which is not what I'm after. Need proper interior design solutions and layouts.

do you want to order furniture and flat items from japan? or are you just looking for interior function ideas? for example, want to save space in a room? buy a double sized futon and roll it up and store it in the morning, as opposed to owning a western style bed....

The bedroom is a good size so a regular double bed fits nicely.

It's the front room and kitchen I need some ideas for really. More along the lines of interior design ideas and storage solutions. Using vertical spaces. Japanese kitchen set ups maybe as I do a lot of cooking, I cook for a living and love to cook at home too but the kitchen is [size=0]tiny[/size]. Any links to sites or publications that deal with modern interiors and working with small spaces would be so much help.

Buying the materials and products shouldn't be a problem, there's Muji, Ikea, Habitat, John Lewis, House Of Fraser stores all close by. Just the ideas and inspration is lacking and we need to get it all right the first time round rather than replacing things regualryly because it wasn;t quite right.

apartment style japanese kitchens are strange. they have a big sink, a large metal counter next to the sink, and a place to put a 2-ring gas stove (range), beside it. there are cupboard above and below and thats it!!! i dont have an oven, the fridge is to the side against the wall of what i guess you could call the kitchen area. TBH, i miss my western style kitchen. we still haven't bought too much yet for our kitchen so i probably wouldnt be of much help here. if you can get through the japanese try the deodeo website, they do pre-designed kitchens and bathrooms.

Edit : This kitchen only has an under the counter fridge, small oven, limited cupboard space. Guess I'll just have to rack equipment up the walls using bars and hooks as most do. The Japanese on that site is way beyond me, apprecaite your help though

Will have to go the trial and error route I think.
