Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares

Post by two lives »

If you haven't heard them, you're in a for a treat... no, treat is too slight a word, you're in for a preview of spiritual enlightenment via melancholic bliss. If you love chord changes that make you shiver, cry and shit and piss yourself, then you'll like this.

For those who only like music made with machines, don't bother. Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares is a choir of about 30 bulgarian women.

Le Mystere Des Voix Bulgares Vol 1. was released on 4AD. Get it!

Their song "Kalimankou Denkou" is scientifically the saddest song in the universe.

If it's not your cup of tea, that's cool... but you'd be wasting your time slating it, it's compositionally divine.

i saw them once performing in a dull television show, while zapping. It struck me right away. Love it. Very unique sound.
expect nothing and live frugally on surprise.

I remember finding this and volume 2 in a 2nd hand shop about 10 years ago for 50p each. It was like every birthday I'd ever have in one day. What I love more than anything is that the choir is (or at least was) made up of basically random women from tiny villages with zero vocal training. Because of the crazy quarter tone harmonics and shit that they use I think Bulgarian field/ folk songs convey a very specific type of melancholy that's near impossible to get using straight western traditional scales.

Nice to see this thread here. It's funny tho, cause in Bulgaria most people don't give a fuck about traditional folk music. Mostly old people like my grandparents would play national radio and this is how i know the songs.
The ladies that sing have undergone some serious training though. It takes years of practice to learn, and dedication as well. It's a dying tradition i'm afraid.
