Twin Peaks: The Series and its References

After all the Twin Peaks samples I've encountered in music, I finally bought this box set and watched the whole show.

And loved it. If there are any fans here, I'd like to open the show up for discussion, but I'd also like to point out a few of the samples/references I was able to dig up throughout the course of the show. Here are a few. Feel free to post more.

Stars of the Lid

[*] "Gasfarming" contains a sample of Big Ed's voice over the telephone "Big Ed's Gasfarm" 0:23
[*] "Mulholland" appears to be a generalized Lynch reference (not strictly Twin Peaks)
[*] Stars the Lids' current Myspace Profile Pic is an homage to Twin Peaks, with the two of them dressed as Agent Cooper and Sheriff Truman

Biosphere

[*] "The Things I Tell You" contains a sample of the Giant "Sorry to wake you, I forgot to tell you something" 2:55 (from Twin Peaks: Season 2, "May The Giant Be With You")

DJ Shadow

[*]"What Does Your Soul Look Like (Part 1: Blue Sky Revisit)" - "It is happening again. It is happening again." (Twin Peaks: Season 2, "Lonely Souls")

Inicidentally - compiling this.. I ran across this site- VERY COOL.

SO ANYWAYS... I'm sure there's more- but maybe I'm the only one that cares. Any other fans?

for Christmas I got the Boxset...its such an amazing show. And Angelo Badalamenti is an excellent composer!

Fill me in on what this show is about. I don't watch T.V. unless it's European football. Is it science fiction or drama?

It's sort of like a supernatural soap opera. It's hard to explain, but it has an atmosphere like no show I've ever seen on TV, maybe this side of the X-Files.

Yeah- the only other Lynch I've seen is Dune and Eraserhead. I've been meaning to watch Mullholland as well.

Amazing show...that is before they discovered who killed Laura Palmer. I'm around episode 17 in Season 2, and at this point the plot seems to be searching for somewhere to go. New characters are being introduced and the characters are acting contrary to how they were first perceived. Apparently the network made Lynch reveal the secret way before he wanted to, and then the momentum that had building was lost. I read in an EW interview that he didn't want to reveal who killed her until the last episode.

I love this show! And David Lynch..gotta see Eraserhead still, but you guys should check out Inland Empire if you haven't. Totally mindfucked movie..I have no idea what's going on in it half the time, but I love how surreal it is, as is most of Lynch's work. I asked for that Twin Peaks boxset for Xmas..but didn't get it. So I'll have to track it down sometime soon..

Also, the Fire Walk With Me movie is awesome..the first time I saw it I was like

yeah i kind of agree with harpoon dodger. in "mulholland drive" the plot seems to be loosely connected and spotchy at points but the general atmosphere that lynch creates is just unbelievable. after i saw that movie for the first, i couldnt get it out of my mind, it really was epic.

Exactly. The show REALLY starts to wander for a bit. But it gets back on track (sort of) with Windom Earle and all of that.

Although, there were some tangential moments there that I could hardly take. The James Hurley/ Evelyn Marsh subplot was pretty ludicrous... and the subplot about Donna's parentage almost veered the show into total Days of Our Lives territory.

But the atmosphere... and I especially love the Red Room scenes. And the Giant. Anything supernatural.

holy crap! thats bugged me for the longest time! Substrata has been in my top 5 fav albums of all time and I was very baked and watching tv when I heard that quote on the show, I thought the song was playing, but realised the other parts of the song werent playing. but i was so baked i couldnt tell if i was dreaming it or actually seeing it. I listen to the album EVERY night while i sleep, so its the soundtrack to my dreams, and thus i got it mixed up. Everyonce in a while the question would pop into my head if i actually saw it on tv or not... the mystery is over!

Oh yeah, that stuff revolutionary as far as television is concerned. The creators of Lost have mentioned they get a lot of inspiration from those scenes.

Just finished watching the entire run - seasons 1 and 2. Wow, I was blown away by the whole thing. I'd not seen one episode beforehand so didn't know what to expect.

In the special features in the Gold Box edition there's a 30 minute reminisce between Lynch and a few of the other actors in a bar all these years later. Lynch turns quite sad when talking about how the TV people put pressure on him to reveal Laura's killer. Even so, it's still a masterpiece I think.

One thing I noticed during that talk, the actress who played Shelley still looks hot even now. But then there were a lot of hot women in the show.
