yes but warp's distribution and contacts with other distributors worldwide was probably the reason BoC left skam records in the first place. skam was too small of a label to contain the hugeness that is BoC. i thought at the time they were more suited the whole "warp sound" anyway. skam was too techno-ey for BoC. but i agree, warp is not the label it once was. the rock band signing should've stopped after !!!(chkchkchk).

i do, because it dilutes the label too much. look what happened to react records, they were huge but too many fingers in too many pies...

dont get me wrong, !!! and maximo park are great bands but they are just not what warp is about. and i've been listening to warp records since before you were born, sonny.

I don't like the garage/punk/metal whatever bands either but Warp needed to sign other bands outside of the electronic/IDM genre or else the Warp boat would've sink. Does it really matter what else they do release? As long as they keep on releasing quality electronic it's fine by me. Even if they quit releasing those too I'd find them on another label.

Warp are a successful boutique label, much as 4AD was during the '80s and early '90s. 4AD's success was that it managed to move from its post-punk and ethereal roots to embrace bands like Pixies and Throwing Muses. Where it went wrong was failing to move beyond that and sign any great new bands or embrace any of the blossoming musical trends once Pixies split.

Warp's problem is that many of its big name artists only release records intermittently these days. Aphex, Ae, Plaid and obviously BoC are hardly prolific, and certainly not enough to keep a sizable indie label busy. Electronica is still a remarkably niche genre, and one that is certainly not high profile in popular culture at the moment. Without branching out beyond their comfort zone Warp would diminish to the size of someone like Leaf, CCO or Type - all great labels but utterly unable to get their music into high-street shops.

Not fussed about !!! but Maxïmo Park, Pivot and Battles are great and if they keep Warp functioning as a good home for our favourite classic Warp artists then all the better.

Oh it's not THAT bad is it? "A Certain Trigger" was a decent record.

Electronica is still a remarkably niche genre, and one that is certainly not high profile in popular culture at the moment.

Yeah, this is a problem that goes straight back to disco, or, really musique concrete if you want to go back that far. Electronic music has never been popular. Sometimes you'll have movies like Saturday Night Fever (for disco) or The Saint (for general electronica) that will briefly bring it into the mainstream, but it's never, ever been popular.

I get the feeling Europe responds better to it than the States do. Would you guys say that's true?

I remember reading an interview with Sean Booth I believe where he said that Ae can make music full-time, and that Aphex especially can live off his music. Aphex still sells a ton of records. In fact, I did a look at the bookstore I work at (we have a music section) and the only Warp acts we really carry are Aphex and Boards of Canada. That's it for Warp-esque acts. We do carry DJ Tiesto and people of his ilk. But the other stuff doesn't sell in North Texas and therefore we don't carry it.

Gravenhurst, Flying Lotus, Battles, Broadcast, Jamie Lidell - all quality, none fitting the old school Warp mould

would you say so? I think maximo park are a good band and let's be honest - even if you don't like them they generate a lot of money and publicity for the label!

to my own tastes i am not into them and can't really see what possessed the label to sign the band

they made some money sure, but they have tainted the label in a way no other act has ... can't see many Maximo fans buying up the Warp back catalogue out of interest either

but you know, you cant expect warp NOT to evolve away from straight "electronic listening music"
and in a way i feel that most of the rock bands on warp to have a certain reason for being there, !!! and battles especially. Even grizzly bear has a cool psychedelic thing going on.
its not like they signed Creed.

Don't you think that the $contract$ would have been the reason?
And regarding WARP. They need to make money like anyone else. Why stay small and unknown. If you have the resources to expand, do. I would imagine that SKAM stays small as the owners have other things to do. Kind of like Rephlex.
