US election

i'm surprised no-one has made a post about this already. It's going to be an interesting few weeks. I've been following it in the UK mainly through the BBC and Guardian - it'd be interesting to hear what the coverage has been like in the US. And what are US Twoismer's thoughts on the forthcoming election.

And the most crucial question - John McCain's running mate: Would you?

Haha I wouldn't.

Honestly, man, I wish we could just reboot this whole election. I'm not real excited about either candidate. And unfortunately (for me), the republicans screwed up SO BAD over the past 8 years that this side of a major scandal I just don't see how Obama is going to lose this one.

As someone once said.. democracy is by far the worst form of government, except for all the other ones.

I was impressed with Obama the other night an think he seems like a genuinely refreshing candidate. I think there's a lot of similarities in this US elsection and the 1997 general election here in the UK - young, charismatic party leader impresses, appeals to young people/ new voters, wins election ending long stretch (in our case 18 years) of right-wing rule. an look how that ended up a few years down the line...

Oh, and i'm not proud of myself, but I probably would.

Honestly, more than anything else, I'm relieved. I'd rather have Obama OR McCain be president than Hillary, and I'd rather have 50 Hillaries than another Bush.

My man has been Ron Paul from the get-go, but I'm probably gonna vote for Obamambamba or McCain. Maybe more towards Obama. It makes me nauseous watching his fans munch bullshit all day about how he's gonna save the world and reverse Global Warming with one hand tied behind his back, but beyond all the hype he seems like a decent president to me.

EDIT: "It makes me nauseous watching his fans munch bullshit all day" - the same goes for the Ron Paul camp, obviously. But if everyone's merit was judged by how their fans behaved...y'know.

I'd like to make a comment about it but I'm getting a bit sick and tired of this whole circus to be honest.

If I was able to vote I'd go for Obama. For the very simple reason: US needs a black president, it's even a shame that I just typed this... I mean, we are in 2008 and there is still so much discrimination/apartheid in the world. This is just another step in the right direction.

It doesn't really matter what the puppet stands for, it's the government which decides what's going to happen, right?

How does one say "apartheid" in the US?

We called it segregation. But... there is no segregation in the US anymore (in a direct legal sense).

I hear what you're saying about a black president. And people were making a similar argument about Hillary as a woman. But I personally feel that electing someone to an office as powerful and influential as President of the United States on the basis of some kind of vague historical guilt would be a big mistake.

Plus, ironically, it would be condescending and racist to do so. Favoring a minority out of pity or guilt doesn't mean that we're not being racist.

I hope that makes sense.

This is more or less how I feel about the "Let's make history!" talk that surrounds the Obama and Hillary campaigns, too. I'd really rather the presidents be judged by their merits as presidents, not by their skin color or their sex bits. Besides, Hillary's has got to be bigger than McCain's and Obama's.

I'll take Obama over McCain. If only because Obama might be able to motivate more people to do something about the problems in our country, and abroad. I think Obama will enable more positive, *sigh,* change.

McCain, to me, doesn't project motivation on behalf of the citizenry. I could care less about the white, rich, Christian constituency he panders to. Ugh.

As a grad student, and a financially poor one at that, neither of them represent me. Nor do I believe my life would change, regardless of who's in office.

Old White guys scare me. And superficial VP picks don't help either.

Oh absolutely.

I'm not investing too much interest in this election because I've become extremely cynical about politics. I do hope, however, that I will be genuinely impressed by President Obama.

I think one of the most interesting/curious things I've encountered this election are the opinions of an Obama presidency at a white supremacist forum. Most wanted Obama elected, for varying reasons. Some wanted him in the White House so he could monumentally screw up so that "sleeping whites" (their delightful term for non-racist white people) would be confronted by irrefutable proof that whites really are superior.

While others thought Obama's first term would be great, then the next four years would be hell. Because according to their logic the first black family in a white neighbour "pretend to be normal". Then they lull the whites into a false sense of security. Oh, those black people are actually pretty awesome..... Then all the drug dealers and gang bangers and thugs take over the neighbourhood.

They also seem to dislike McCain. Actually, they seem to hate everything but hate.

I remember loling at them getting very upset about a Scottish magazine celebrating African culture.

BOB ROSS FOR PRESIDENT!!

Man...I wish this guy ran for president when he was still alive. He's so happy and wonderfully optimistic. He's like a human with a God-like love in his heart.

Everytime I see him paint I get this feeling of "this is how God thought while creating this planet"

Sadly missed.

Totally. He was the man. I'll bet he was far to cool to get into the dirty, wretched, miserable, shitty, disgusting, rotten, horribly perverse, and fucked up world of politics though.

funny you should mention that. i get this feeling that anyone who stays in politics long enough and rises far enough to get to the point of being in the running for president has got to be among the most awful, jaded, pathological fuckers our poor society can spew forth. those are the skills that get you ahead in polly-ticks.
