Twoism Electronic Music Cool Wall

Post by observation »

After literally an avalanche of one other forum member supported the idea of a cool wall (it's you mexicola :) ), here is the Twoism Electronic Music Cool Wall... add your views of cool and uncool electronic music in this thread. Clearly it would be best if it didn't deteriorate into major arguments and flaming but we are humans after all...

Cool: Aphex Twin
Uncool: The Thompson Twins

I'm only vaguely keeping to the electronic theme here. But in true Top-Gear fashion, we have....

Ice-cold: Stars of the Lid. Not strictly electronic, but they use keyboards, so hey..
Cool: Hills West, Phasen, Track53, Sarin Sunday, Sinkfield - promote yer own I say!

Uncool: Jean Micheal Jarre -simply because of his god-awful 80's Miami-Vice-esque suits complete with rolled up sleeves. Plus, anyone who plays a laser-harp without even the vaguest hint of irony is dubious in my book.
Seriously uncool: Moby. Yes, worse even than Jean Micheal Jarre- nuff said.

PS - for those of you unfamiliar with Top Gear here in the UK, the idea is you can totally rip apart the entries by other people. For example, whilst The Thompson Twins sucked big time, they did sport an infeasibly large collection of silly hats and for that, they are getting moved into seriously uncool.

Actually, I think we should open up a new sub-seriously uncool group, simply titled "Moby", because let's be honest here, there is nothing less cool than Moby. Is there....?

Laser-harp! A whole new universe of uncool may have to be brought to existence just for the laser-harp... :)

Having said that I can only imagine that Jean-Michel WAS cool at one point, as Charlotte Rampling married him. If I was him, I'd roll up the sleeves of my white suit and say "Mock me if you like. But did you ever get home from a gig in front of a million people and find Charlotte Rampling in bed waiting to fuck you?"

So on that basis alone, JMJ is in fact Cool. :)

Cool: Bob Moog and his synths.
Uncool: Rick Wakeman and his synth solos.

I think Chem Bros used to be pretty cool. Them along with Orbital got me into electronic music in a big way. Also Eiffel 65.

Cool: Danger, adeyhawke, old Beck
Uncool: new Autechre, new Beck
Ragingly Uncool: NIN

Seriously. I used to love NIN back in The Fragile days. Everything he touches now is either SHIT or BULLSHIT. Fuck Year Zero, fuck Ghosts, fuck The Slip, it's all worthless soulless regurgitated formulaic glitch rock throwup.

Moby may be cheesy, but at least he's not as big a tool as Trent is, and at least his ambient stuff is listenable. Eat my severed gangrenous dick, Trent Reznor.

However much I love NIN I have to agree with the tag of "Ragingly Uncool".

Ha, nice one t70, I have to agree. I thought downward spiral was... bearable. But everything else is just whiny pish, and I can always generate whiny pish myself if that's what I need. I don't understand the cult of personality around Trent, although I would stop short of making him eat any part of me, severed, gangrenous or otherwise.

I'd like to add:

Cool: Kraftwerk for the incredible music, the love of cycling, the amazing robots and the stunning technical innovations
Uncool: Kraftwerk for the "Tron" suits, and looking like bank managers reading their emails during their live show.

Cool:
Four Tet, Flying Lotus

Cool AND Uncool:
Tangerine Dream (REALLY cool for innovative stuff like 'Phaedra', uncool for some of their later work - which, while not completely bad, just is underwhelming in comparison)

So Uncool That The Sun Is, In Comparison, Reaching A Temperature Of Below Absolute Zero:
Fucking Basshunter and his twatty dragonshit contemporaries <--

Very Cool - Delia Derbyshire: Posh bird who made weird shit on analogue equipment. Win
Cool - Sébastien Tellier: Seems like a thoroughly nice chap too from the interviews I've heard
Undecided - Squarepusher: I'm not really into what he's doing at the moment but I'm keeping the faith
Uncool - Plaid: Totally lost their edge
Very Uncool - Sigur Rós: I can't stand them

i agree. i like thompson twins, moby, tycho and fatboy slim (ok not all of their music but each of these 3 have had shining moments: thompson twins: hold me now, moby: go, fatboy slim: well, there are a few ^_^, tycho: his whole first album).

in fact, i try to keep an open mind about music as much as possible, i mean shit!, my little brother just got me into lil' wayne the other day and i dont usually go for that kind of music.

...and i cant believe someone in here is shitting on beck! WTF

Sorry man but Guero hurt my confidence in him a little and I found The Information just straight up boring. I love almost all his older stuff - Midnight Vultures, Odelay, Mellow Gold, uhh... Sea Change... that song Lazy Flies...

I can agree with you on The Information and Guero, but have you heard Modern Guilt? It's totally Beck being awesome again. His best since Midnite Vultures.
And on the basis that Beck can make such an awesome come back....

*Moves the picture of Beck from uncool back up to cool.*

And since I'm tall, I'll do what Clarkson does.

*Jumps and puts it way up where no one can reach it.*

TAKE THAT HAMMOND.
