Nothing but happy BOC tunes for one of my friends :)

Post by Totopatter »

ok so this is the deal. One of my friends isn't entirely familiar with BOC but so far, based on what she's heard, she really digs the "lighter, happier" stuff. So for her bday, she wants me to put together CD/DVD of nothing but happy, safe (although BOC-safe means underlying sadness), soothing, semi-contemplative, warm BOC tracks.. It has to be intense, nevertheless.

I'd program them in this order:

Colour of Fire
Finity
Peakock Tail
Oirectine
A is to B is to C
Triangle Hexagon Sun
Forest Moon
Sherbet Head
Amo Bishop Roden
Olson
Zoetrope
Aquarius
Corsair
Maquarie Ridge
Constants are changing

What do you guys think of the programming? What else could be added and where, what's missing.. etc etc.

the highlight of the "mix" would without a doubt be Aquarius. And Corsair right after that would sound like a monster..

Corsair is a downer and Oirectine freaks me out, I would take them off.

And I would replace them with Hey Saturday Sun and Satellite Anthem Icarus--two very uplifting tracks.

And to finish it off, I would end it with Macquarie Ridge--its more positive and ethereal than Constants are Changing, which is sort of sad and longing.

PS Where is ROYGBIV? You can't exclude that one!

Otherwise looks good :)

I don't think Corsair is a downer at all, and I like the idea of it being right after Aquarius.

And then Macquarie... those three are a knockout in order.

Over the horizon radar needs to be in there instead of corsair! And maybe poppy seed too instead of zoetrope, or is that not BOC strictly speaking? I'm not sure about Color of the Fire too! And ROYGBIV must be in there!

I think you've got most of 'em. Olson definitely. Open the Light definitely. Peacock Tail definitely.

that having been said, in a way i think it's too bad your friend won't open up to the darker side of Boards. it's not quite the same thing as listening to death metal. yeah, it can be kind of a headtrip, but...so...don't listen to it with the lights off then! :p

LOL @ Triangle Hexagon Sun = self-OWNAGE

Valid points. I just thought that Oirectine and Turquoise Hex Sun bear similar predominant melodies, THS' scintillates more and Oirectine curves differently.. the complementing swooshing synth sounds sound a little eerie...

How the FUCK did I forget ROYGBIV, whoa...

Mac Ridge should finish the mix off, true. Constants R Changing is too contemplative... like an open ended question, for lack of a better description.

Not sure about Dayvan Cowboy, I personally find it.. too moving/sad, LOL. 84 Pontiac Dream is another moving/sad track because of its nostalgic quality, its got that 80s Degrassi Junior High thing to it, haha

Satellite Anthem, Kaini Industries, Hey Saturday Sun.. all good in their own right.. Gotta rework the comp now..

If you are wanting the more accessible stuff, then Roygbiv, Everything You Do Is a Balloon and - yes - Dayvan Cowboy are a must. I'm not saying these are their best work, but they are the easiest for noobs to "get" I reckon.

That's a perfect description of Constants are Changing. I also agree that Dayvan Cowboy is a bit too... epic... moving...? IDK though. It is a pretty uplifting song. Maybe you should stick it on there.

Ok, Dayvan it is then :)

Turquoise70: funny you mention the darker stuff coz I was thinking of putting together a comp of nuthin but the darkest, meanest, most sinister BOC stuff, hehe (for my own perusal)

(some reviewer's comments on Amazon said something like BOC is real bad music that causes brain damage, mouahaha..)

I don't think Finity is a happy, uplifting track...

I would include:

Alpha Rainbow
1986 Summer Fires
5-9-78
Poppy Seed remix
The 29th track from Old Tunes 1

I wouldn't say it's real bad, but I wouldn't say it doesn't cause brain damage...

I found it. Couldn't help but LAUGH when I read this:

1.0 out of 5 stars
Ridiculously bad music..........Warning: Can Cause Brain Damage!, August 10, 2005

By J.R. (Colorado) - See all my reviews

I've been a hardcore electronic music fan since the mid seventies(Schulze, Roach etc) and have a VERY open mind but I just don't get what's so special about this music. IMO, BOC's music is so absurdly overrated that it baffles my mind to even think that these guys have probably made tons of money from selling this junk. This nonsense about "numbers" and "math" as well as the recurring "childhood" theme that everyone talks so much about is nothing but marketing hype. Music aside, I must hand it to these two guys for being marketing geniuses. They have managed to stay out of the spotlight providing little to no biographical information other than saying that they are members of some sort of "society"(the so-called "Hexagon" blah blah blah ). They further capitalize on two popular music forms: (1) Trance/house beats (2) low-fi acid and analog samples. Add to this formula the blatant Satanic messages found in Geogaddi and whala! You have music that sells in bunches. Now, this is not in any way saying that some of what was already written in earlier reviews is not true. For instance, Geogaddi can definitely scare the life out of you; specially if you fall asleep to it under a less than optimal mental state. But this is not in any way indicative of genius. It has been well known and documented for centuries that certain tones played in certain ways at certain tempos will cause the mind and body to react in specific ways(there are countless classical works that capitalize on such techniques). In short, BOC highlights everything that is bad about this sub genre of modern electronic music: Random, chaotic noises thrown on top of low-fi drum loops with an occasional, politically incorrect vocal part thrown in here and there. All it takes is some time and a little experience with an application such as Absynth and most anyone can turn out "music" like this. I can't rate Geogaddi any lower than a 1 star, or else I would. Stay away from this garbage. It may cause brain damage.
