As far as what i believe, i don't believe any of the specific ideas the media seems to whip out every once in a while, i believe something might happen, but that's the extent of it for me.
The one thing that keeps me interested in this whole 2012 thing is how people are going to be acting once 2012 comes around, and once we grow very close to it, I predict anarchy and mass panic world wide - the media got a hold of this years ago and its getting crazier and crazier - people believe whats on TV these days, at least most of the general population.

So true. I agree that even if the 2012 "apocalypse" doesn't happen, there will still be mass worldwide panic, possibly anarchy.
One thing I forgot to mention: I am a college Spanish student and one of my professors, an older, pretty well-to-do and highly knowledgable person, says that the Mayan prohpecies have ALWAYS been correct in one form or another.
I think it's fascinating how humans' ability to measure and record data about nature is so offset by their tendency to take their best guess at the gaps in their knowledge, and then believe it as if it were truth, and then fight about which made up story should be beleived. It boggles the mind.

well, see, the link i gave is just a promotional site for an upcoming movie by sony pictures. so....i was just kidding. but personally, when the date rolls around, i'd enjoy gobbling a bunch of acid and sitting smack dab in the middle of the CERN collider. a sort of 'heaven's gate' remanifestation, don't you think? no, but it would probably be fun either way.

I don't suggest this to be disdainful of those among you who hold beliefs about dates such as 2012. I have read about the extremely skillful Mayan astronomers and their very sophisticated number system (Volume 1 of the Universal History of Numbers by Georges Ifrah if you're interested).
What I'm getting at is that there is a strong need for individuals or groups to identify the coming apocalypse, and it almost seems to be down to an egotistical need to be the harbinger of doom or even to experience the end of the world personally.
Well I was 16 when the y2k stuff had people all excited. And it felt like more things could have gone wrong then (with old computers messing up and stuff). But looking back at it I think it was just hype. Grocery stores prob made a killing though.
To me 2012 will be y2k all over again. At best something to get a little more excited about than you normally would be at a new years party.

y2k was a serious problem that took years to correct.

Problems with computers and the '00 crap I believe were known since the 70s. It took a lot of time and money rewriting software and etc to keep there from being any serious problems.
