Gnosticism and BoC

I've studied BoC for quite a while now and I've come to the conclusion that they are most likely gnostics of the esoteric vein. I came to this conclusion based upon the nature of the religious/spiritual metaphors within their lyrics and music and their intercorrelations, &c, &c. Essentially, I think BOC are too spiritual to be atheists, yet too intelligent to subscribe to a dogmatic faith. And I believe this shows in their music. Anyone else sort of noticed this? Anyone else at all here even know about gnosticism?

I've never seen them mention it anywhere. Then again, being gnostic isn't something you're going to run around and tell people, "I'm gnostic! I'm gnostic!" It's more a of a way of looking at the world, a conglomeration of beliefs, and less a strict label.

My guess is they grew up with religious parents, and were only sort of taught those beliefs, and I'm also assuming they don't practice it at all. I can't tell you exactly why I picture that except for the fact they incorporate bits of their childhood in their music.

what's so controversial about calling yourself a gnostic especially when you make music that is equally controversial?

I like to call myself a spiritual cognostic

In their interviews, their general sentiment regarding religion and spirituality seems mostly be one of intellectual curiosity or psychology, at least in how it's used in their music. Religion in general says a great deal about how our minds and societies work, etc.

But, from personal experience, I believe those that have a fascination with math(s), nature, art and history often tend to follow a fairly specific spiritual vein: too rational to fall into an organized religion, but too immersed in the stuff of life to see it as fatalistic or meaningless.

I don't like to speculate about people I don't know, but my guess is that the BoC lads would fall into that category.

Is anyone here strict about their religion (if they are religious) ? I can't picture a boards fan being a dedicated religious person.

Sorry if that was a stupid question, I'm just curious about these things.

I'm not religious, but I'm not strict about my nonreligion. Life is for learning, not deciding you have got the answer and coasting to the grave with it.

Me.

Well, sort of.

I'm atheist as in I don't recognise the necessity of there being a god - logically speaking.

But more generally I don't feel the need for any kind of explanation outside of deductive reasoning.

If you say you're atheist I see it has quite a hard-line position - the Dawkins position - not something you can pick and choose on. Otherwise you're agnostic.

BOC I think are, at least, interested in the spiritual life. I wouldn't go any further.
