Infleunce of early Autechre on Hi Scores?

I was listening to-day to both Incunabula and Hi Scores and I was struck by their similarity in a lot of ways. If I have my history right, Autechre heard Twoism and contacted BoC for release on SKAM. I think HiScores is by far their most IDM release, and was heavily influenced by albums like Incunabula. Discuss.

Hi Scores was definitely arranged with the general Skam sound in mind...it's evident in every track picked for the EP, IMO.

I think there is no doubt that this was the case. I also think that boards at that time must have influenced by Black Dogs "Bytes", they really were the innovators of the hiphop drums with spacey synths giving that funky / futuristic sound. In fact there is one part of Happy Cycling when the synths come in at the end that is classic Black Dog (especially the guy Balil from Black Dog). They also must have been influenced by Aphex Twins selected ambient works and The Orbs "Little Fluffy Clouds" IMO.

This is only normal, you don't create anything in a vacuum. I think though, and they have pretty much said this in interviews, that The Campfire Headphase" is much more them, it's the kind of music they always wanted to make, I think at first because they were on Warp they felt they had to do the IDM thing, but it was not 100% them.

Well both albums have that cookie-cutter IDM sound to em. I still think 444 sounds like it came directly off saw1. Inc just sounds a bit more robotic. But I wonder how that album would be precieved had ae not gone on that wild course after Chaistic Slide.

I wouldn't classify Hi Scores as IDM, but yes, they were definitely influenced by Autechre and Black Dog.

I was listening to Tri Repetae, and I think I can hear a lot of influence on BoC in some songs but especially towards the end of C/Pach probably not a coincidence that its one of the shortest, and most accessible tunes on the album.

When I was first getting into this 'IDM' music, the first CDs I went out and bought were Tri Repetae and MHTRTC, so those albums will forever be cousins in my mind.

EDIT: 606th post... cool, Ae used a roland 606 quite a bit in their early stuff, including tri repetae, right?
