This thread is about me professing my love for the internet.

I love it
I love it

I LOOOOOVE IT. Can't live without it. Willing to give up tv and radio for it. Ok, scratch that off, who cares about radio these days, unless you're some carpenter driving around the city all the time.

Anyhow. I love the internet. Thanks for listening.

I'm here to stick up for Radio 4 (the station, not the band). Yes it may be middle-class, English and full of cliches but it also has good news coverage, great comedy and good discussion. So while I do indeed love the net, I'm throwing a vote for radio as well. Radio Scotland also has a few good shows. Let's hear it for Eddie Mair!

I have a question for totopatter (and others I suppose)

Have you always lived with the Internet? That is, were you born after...'85 or '86? I'm curious because I was born in '82 and I can distinctly remember a time before the internet AND cell phones. Although, my sister, who is a few years older, I would imagine finds that distinction even clearer. I just wonder what the internet has done for evolution, be it physiologically or other?

And the only good radio is public radio.

Damn straight public radio is the only radio - www.thecurrent.org they stream it live, playing some wacky music at times, but then again they play what noone else does and they don't have commercials or rediculously lame DJ's.

As far as the internet goes, i haven't had it my entire life, i remember when i first discovered it though. I've been around computers since i was about six years old (roughly) the first thing i actually figured out what to do on a computer (besides click random things and hit the keyboard a bunch) was the microsoft voice - i typed a bunch of bad words i knew and cranked the speakers up, then proceeded to have microsoft sam read it aloud for my mother to hear - she was pissed.

Ever since the internet, my writing skills have remarkebly gone downhill, but my knowledge has been increasing everytime i use it. I still read books though!

I definately wouldn't be a chub if it wasn't for computers I will agree to that.

I am old enough to remember when the TV here in the UK had 3 channels. These shut down around midnight and didn't start again until around 3-4pm the next day.

Internet? Mobile phones? PAH! You don't know yer born...

My favorite local DJ, by far. He's actually played some of my tunes...was a great moment when I heard him mention "Skytree" on the air.

Long live the radio (especially MPR).

I remember when Ceefax was the internet. It actually scares me a bit just how dependent people who have grown up with internet are. I've only had it a few years and where I can definitely see the benefits you have people like my mates nephew who spends like 5 hours just sat on Facebook and Myspace and probably 4chan and it's kinda sad because when we were his age we were out drinking 20/20 on the swings and hanging about the chippie and just dossing around and making our own entertainment.

This. Ceefax and Oracle with weird trippy music WAS daytime TV.

And as for 20/20 on the swings, man I must have been mashed because I don't remember you being there fella.

Oh man! Oracle! HAHAHAAHAAAAAA! Yeah, you probably don't remember me there because I was being molested by loads of kids rubbing their hands on my Global Hypercolour T-shirt. It all got a bit hectic whe nthey noticed my Fido Dido hightops so I had to go pretty quickly...

i was born in 86 and i remember a time before the internet. i remember before CDs and DVDs too. but i grew up with the internet because i wanted to. it didn't take a normal kid and suck his life away, the internet doesn't do that. it took a weird, daydreamy, emotionally oversensitive kid with very few friends and gave him something to do that didn't constantly remind him of how skinny and uncoordinated and unathletic and hyperemotional he was.

For the geeky and oversensitive contingent, the internet really is a blessing. Without it we would all have been wandering around in a daze and smiling through clenched teeth until one of us invented it anyway.
Well that is exactly how I spent my teenage years, minus the part about inventing the internet of course.

I get what you're saying and if you've found the internet to be psycho/sociologically beneficial then that can only be a good thing, but I'm curious as to how it's been helpful? That's to say, has it been a case of it's helped you adopt techniques and strategies so that you are more comfortable with social interaction and situations you would have found difficult before? Or is it that you find other "geeky and oversensitive" (I don't really understand what you mean by that TBH) people on the internet and you can relate to them and so find some comfort in knowing you aren't the "only one"? Or is it something totally different? I have to be honest, this has somewhat piqued my interest...

I too was born in '86 and distinctly remember having a computer with no internet. It was an old Macintosh. One day we got a PC and were finally able to hook it up to AOL (America Online). Does anyone else remember the days of AOL? Does anyone else remember the days when there wasn't a website for EVERYTHING? We had a dial-up, 23.3k external modem.

I also remember getting my first CD player.

Isnt it amazing to think that some kids were born AFTER the Playstation 2!!! Madness! Those kids are like 10 now!
