BoC Nostalgia

Well, even though I grew up in the 90s, I didn't grow up with what was on tv at the time. Every cartoon I saw when I was younger where copied betamax tapes from hong-kong. Mostly stuff from the early eighties. I think that's why BoC gives me the nostalgia bumps

I highly agree with this, especially that last part there.Joebot Kill wrote:There are many vague memories that BoC conjures up for me. I was born in the mid 80s, but I barely remember them...
The thing about Boards is that the music doesnt represent the 70s or 80s. There are other bands that sound like theyre from the 70s or 80s. BoC represents memories of childhood through a 70s/80s aesthetic. That's one reason why I think this music is so special for everyone born around the 70s and even into the 90s. When I show the music to my parents, for example, it has no special connection for them, the 70s and 80s werent the magical little kid dream lands that they are for us. And who knows, our children might not even have the same connection to their music that we do. Sure they might think "sounds like the 70s" but for us, boards of canada represents a time in our life when the world was much more innocent, and our lives were bright and colorful and full of bliss. But of course, we grow up, and learn that the world is in fact, quite fucked. And I think thats where the darkness in their music comes from.
Also: Hey DocRobert! Glad you decided to join us here on this little board about Boards!
I told one of my friends on the internet about this (he has an account on this board and is the one who directed me to this place, yet I don't know his name here), and he said that I should put this on the board. So, I will, but, for a disclaimer, I have no backgrond or history of mental instability, and I have never taken drugs (although I kinda want to...just once though, to see what it's like and have that spiritual experience that everyone talks about).
The reason, why I bring up nostalgia is because what I have gone through. When I listen to Boards, I am attracted to a certain group of memories or ideas.
I have grouped all of these ideas together, though, and out comes what I think that all BoC music relates to in some way. It is called Skyliner.
Now, I'll explain why. It started out about a year ago, when I first discovered BoC on the 'net, and of course I loved the music, but the nostalgia almost drove me crazy. A few days later I had a dream that I was on a bus, and we were traveling across America, when we stopped, in the middle of seemingly nowhere, to take a break. It was a small, quaint town to my first inspection, but what it really had, were skyscrapers. This small town, (I think it was in the middle of Kansas, which is the same thing as nowhere LOL) had freakin' skyscrapers, and they were all grouped together in a clustered formation. The weird part was that, in this dream, you did not find the skyscrapers, or the town for that matter until you just stumbled across it. When I woke up, I was amazed by the dream, and recalled the name of the town before we entered it, and it was called Skyliner.
About two weeks after this incident, I had to take a trip through Kansas. As I got off the main interstate, and onto another highway that led to my destination, I saw something weird in the morning mist. They were two metal structures, one on each side of the higway (eastbound and westbound) obscured by trees. My first thought was, that, if Skyliner were to be real, the entrance into it would be right there. I immediately denounced the silly notion, and kept on driving, but in the back of my head, I knew that the architecture of those two buildings looked exactly like the archetecture of Skyliner, and even a more disturbing thought was that if I ever tried to look for those buildings ever again, I would never find them.
Eventually, I came across a hilly landscape in Kansas, and, another backbrain thought emerged, and it was that this place is where Skyliner would be at if it were real. So, I fetched out my BoC CD and popped it into the CD player.
The next two days progressed normally: I got to my destination, did what I needed to do, and started back home, but when I got on the highway home, I saw something a little strange, and something I did not notice before. It was a shack that was turned into a bar, and, facing the highway was the rear end of the building, which was the spot that posted what beers they sold there. Among the ads, there was one that was not a beer, and it said, "Welcome to Skyline". It was a divine prank. I had thought of Skyliner being around here if it was real, and there is a poster there that said welcome
to Skyline, ONE LETTER OFF. I drove down the highway, still digesting the sign that I had just saw, and then, posted in a community of trailers off the side of the road, another sign, yet in a different style whatsoever (to dispell there being some kind of local orgainization or district name), that said, "Welcome To Skyline". Flabberghasted. This was too real, I thought to myself, and I looked out again on the plains, that is now supposedly holding this community. When I had gotten away from the little bits of civilization that the town held, and got out to the country, there was brown, rectangular road sign. If you have ever been on a road-trip, you know that this signifies an important place or a natural landmark. And this, the most disturbing, reality shredding thing of all held the text, "Skyline overlook----1 mile". Now , in this part, there is not a skyline, there are no buildings, there are no skyskrapers. Yet, it still talks of it, in the very place where I would expect Skyilner to be.
Here is a drawing that I made by listening to BoC very closely, and using pictures from my dream. I still have not seen Skyliner, but this is the world's closest thing.
Fast forward to 2 months ago, and here is when it goes into full-circle mode. I was doing some searching on Boc Pages, learning about the very enigmatic band. I clicked onto the page where it talked about their name, and their inspiration. Their inspirations are from Calgary, I think, the place of their childhood. They speak of the notion of skyscrapers, in the middle of nowhere. Skyliner. A community of skyscrapers in the middle of nowhere.
Recent meditation on this subject has also told me why the place is called Skyliner, and combined with what I know about Skyliner (which, was created as a place where one could be free from the world, and where one did not have to care about bills, money, taxes, cars, emotional struggle, depression, etc), I was able to pull out that the creators wanted to make you feel like you could touch the skyline. Cooincidentally, I recently also figured out that there was a song title that said "feels like you could touch the sky".

DocRobert, reading your post gave me chills down my spine. That right there shows the truly enigmatic influence of BoC. I don't believe in coincidences; there has to be some divine intervention in your dream.

welcome turbo moe
and Docrobert, that's a truly fascinating story! i've had huge amount of experiences involving BOC, the best experiences were always whilst smoking cannabis and listening to them through headphones near the river aeron, which is a few minutes walk from my house...the thoughts, visualisations...i was able to to take apart the songs and hear each and every sound - i would be in a complete trance, i would never question the sounds...it's hard to explain looking back at it now. the most surreal moment must have been listening to them on top of a cliff as a red moon bounced around the sky and the waves rolled backwards. the darkest moment must have been 'you could feel the sky' - hidden deep beneath that track are the words 'pressure' played over and over again...yet i've yet to find anyone else who hears this!

Re: BoC Nostalgia
A word and a number, kiteracer 2.
Usually nostalgia (by definition) is looking back at a specific time period often fondly.
Knowing that kiteracer was composed pre-1996, it is the oddest kind of nostalgia I have experienced. In the way that I associate a few pre-naughties decades with this sound palette. Of Times wistful and simple.
Atmosphere is intricate, it can trap me in a dream state melancholy loop of 2 minutes 30s. It fascinates me so much.
