Are the old tunes up to scratch?

I have noticed recently that some people recon these tunes are crap and dont compare to their later material.

I wondered what people here thought about the trilogy of old tunes compilations..
Do you think they are acceptable amongst other BOC releases?

Hit and miss IMO. Interesting rather than amazing, although a few tracks stand out.

But then, maybe that's why they have never had an official release? :wink:

They are definitely in a league of their own, but only avid BoC fans can really appreciate them. Not that it matters, since -only- avid BoC fans bother looking for them.

I think the old tunes are a lot more nostalgic then their official releases...and I guess that's what I find so appealing about them.

Just take them for what they are - old sketches. Not that great as a collection of tracks but there are some gems in there for sure.

i think some of them are absolutely beautiful but they have their own sound that's pretty distinct from later stuff. i'm also at a loss to say which ones are beautiful because my eyes glaze over every time i stare down 40 some odd unlabeled AUDIOTRACKs.

Ahaha..well said. I love the majority of all three tapes..but my personal fave is still Old Tunes V1

The old tunes are great. You just have to learn which ones are proper tracks, and which ones are interesting sound clips.

For instance, '5.9.78' is absolutely beautiful, while 'Peace,Tony,Devil' is a sound clip of some TV commercials and news.

As a whole both are rather weak. To me it's like eating only the marsh mellows out of lucky charms. Only a handful of the tracks I actually like.

I think most of them are first rate

Lick,Dave (I'm a Real Traditionalist),Alpha Rainbow,Powerline Misfortune,Magic Teens,Northern Plastics are all incredible

I listened to all the old tunes etc., and didn't really care for them a whole lot, although they do show some talent. Perhaps if I'd heard them on an album I paid money for i'd appreciate them more. So here's to the Bros releasing them.

There are brilliant ideas in some songs, some are "just" very beautiful. Only few are crap.

5/9/78 was the first boc song I fell in love with. I all started there, a magical moment.

I was surprised that so little people on this board love the old tunes trilogy as I do, as I absolutly adore them. So many awesome stuff on there. What about: Davie addison, sequoia, 5:9:78, up the march bank, statue of liberty, dave, fly in the pool, mukhinabaht, alpha rainbow, I love my new shears, lick, powerline misfortune, etc, etc..

My personal fav's are statue of liberty and davie addison.
Let's put it in a bold statement: the older the BoC tune, the more I will probably love it..

most of them are not very good. at most 3 or 4 tracks are worthy of repeated listens while the overwhelming majority are, at best, interesting from a historical perspective.

they didn't get released for a reason (sample clearance issues aside).

I really like them, and if I'm honest I'd say I actually prefer them to the released albums. I think there's a lot more interesting stuff going on in terms of the overall dynamic as opposed to the official albums which are a bit too thematic for my taste. I'm more likely to sit through the entirity of OT vol. 1 than I am Geogaddi. [/instant pariah]

some really beautiful material - kiteracer2, alpha rainbow, finity, forest moon, skimming stones, mansel, m9, 5.9.78 phew...although i'll have to admit a few do come across as your average stoners doodling around on synthesizers whilst watching daytime television!
