Hope this isn't old news (I did a search) but I was reading up about Chernobyl the other day (as you do) and I spotted this - http://www.chornobyl.in.ua/en/chernobyl-2.htm . A huge metallic structure hidden in the woods nearby.
I also discovered some unexpected information. Nature in the Zone of Alienation near the reactor "seems to have not only survived, but flourished due to significant reduction of human impact. The zone has become a 'Radiological Reserve', a classic example of an involuntary park" (from Wikipedia).
In a bizarre way, 20 years after the accident, Chernobyl has become a beautiful place out in the country.

There is a 3-D model of this on Google Earth now. Very impressive it is too. Was snooping around Chernobyl/Pripyat (as you do) and saw it off in the distance. At first I thought it was a graphics glitch! Check it out at:
51°18'23.29"N / 30° 4'3.86"E
I'd seen photos of this thing before, but I never realised it was so close to Chernobyl.

That's probably the array responsible for the infamous "Woodpecker" signal on ~7000 kHz which was a blight on the shortwaves back in the 1980s...
and which I am sure is the inspiration for the lads' paean to remote radio-detection.
ah, yes, just found this:

Jesus, was it you indeed?
To flirt unkindly with my greed
Promising eternal life
When you knew it was not right?
When you knew that what I'd need was willingness and comfort there
To flirt unkindly with my greed
Promising eternal life
When you knew it was not right?
When you knew that what I'd need was willingness and comfort there

EDIT: the 'Woodpecker' or 'Buzzer' can also be heard on the Conet Project. Disk4, track 32.
