So, every week or two I try to make a trek up north to visit my dad, to catch up and mess about with music, astronomy, outdoor stuff, whatever he's up for. I'm currently trying to help him find a way to add reverb and other effects to instruments in real-time, using his computer. Essentially, what he wants to do is play the Irish/penny whistle and listen to some reverb via pass-through audio. I've been using software like Ableton and Cubase for so long, I'm sort of at a loss when it comes to freeware/shareware solutions to this kind of a problem.
We just downloaded and played with Wavosaur a bit, but it didn't accomplish what we needed it to. Most of the other free programs out there seem to be similarly limited. Does anyone here know of a possible solution? We'd greatly appreciate any help you guys could offer...figured you'd be a savvy bunch in this area. : )
P.S. He's running Windows Vista on a reasonably new laptop.

Haha...my dad is indeed awesome. Thanks fellas. I always love going over there. He has loads of instruments I don't...literally over a dozen penny whistles, two native american flutes, a hammered dulcimer (my favorite), a mandolin, etc. When he's on business trips, sometimes I just stop in to look after his cat and sample shit until 2 AM.
Nurthice, I like the suggestion of using Buzz. I'd thought about giving him my boxed copy of Absynth 5, since he could just set one of the oscillators to his mic input, and add effects from there. But, Buzz might work equally as well for that purpose, and he'd be able to download it right away rather than waiting for me to visit again. He said he'd love to play with a good software synth too, so that might be a good route to go.
Blink of an Eye, Audiomulch is great, and I think he'd really like it...the trouble is that, while reasonably priced, it still costs $189 for the full version. My dad's looking for something free. But, I'll certainly send him the link and recommend he checks it out, so cheers!

It's a free Impulse response reverb, as opposed to algorighm based.
You will need to download some impluse responses to load into SIR.
Acoustica's has some wayyyyy decent , FREE, Briscati ( really expensive hardware verb) impulses.
