Why I never really enjoyed OTV1 (35 Random Tracks)

Post by Tekmosis »

I want to see if anyone can relate with me on the two points I'm about to make about why OTV1 (now known as 35 random tracks) never really did it for me.

1. Obvious first reason. The cassette hissing in the backround is atrocious. Bad sound quality can ruin a whole track for me, especially with Boards of Canada and other electronic music where every little sound means something. For this reason I am usually motivated to spend $0.99 cents on a song from itunes rather than rip it from youtube for free and have the quality be reduced. And also why listening to BoC on headphones rather than speaker is also more enjoyable. Not only the hissing on 35 random tracks, but the sound quality is just awful, all you on here have heard it ...

2. No song titles. This always really bugged me and put a big hole in the entire listening experience. ot only is BoC my favorite band for the unparalelled music they produce, but I always fund myself enjoy a track that much more if the track title was innovative, creative, and original. It got me thinking and set a tone for the track. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this right. I'll break it down like this, what would you rather listen to without knowing what the sngs sounded like: Audiotrack 11 or Infinite Lines of Colorful Sevens? See what I mean?

anyway, my rant is over. can anyone see what I mean by my second reason?

of course. I've got the very same thoughts about track titles. And not only for BoC tracks, this applies to all artists. I tend to dislike tracks without titles earlier than those with titles... strange but true.

I think artwork and proper track titles are next to the music itself a very big deal when enjoying the actual music. It creates a proper experience if everything is neatly done.

there are some amazing tracks on this "release," but others just don't do it for me. really the only BOC stuff I've heard that i can say that about.

1. For many musicians, the nostalgic sound of tape hiss and tape compression are an intended effect. Obviously BoC meant for these elements to be there, otherwise they wouldn't have released the music out in the first place. They seem to have quite perfectionist qualities and attitudes towards their music, and i really doubt that they would've accepted the cassette tape as a distribution medium if it was simply just "the only way to get their music out" at the time. in the case of BoC, i believe that the tape hiss and compression are wholly intentional.

2. Having track names, from a certain point of view, can detract from the music quite catastrophically. Having no track names might be a way for the musician to implore the listener to make their own interpretations about the music. For example, the recent Ghosts I-IV release by Nine Inch Nails was intentionally left with ambiguous track names with the hope that the listener would come up with their own idea of a visual identity for each track.

on the second point, i must admit that it seems out of place for BoC to not give track names, however my point is that (in my opinion) you are limiting yourself by not giving "nameless" tracks a chance....by any artist. in many cases, tracks with no name are not a product of laziness but rather a conscious decision to get the listener to pay attention. of course, you're totally entitled to have prejudice against tracks if you really want to. but sometimes it's a good experience to just trust, and listen to music.

Hm. I dont even have OTV1. The other ones, though are out of order mainly and, though it can be fixed, what bugs me is that I know I am missing tracks. they are all jumbled and I don't really have the patience to sort them out. That being said, 'Buckie High', '5-9-78', and 'Northern Plastics' are among my favorite tunes ever.

I gave the Audiotracks titles according to their number: six, nine, twenty-three, etc...
Maybe we need to hold a contest for who can come up with the best track titles!

i dunno. i personally doubt that they intended to have that tape hiss over the entire thing. im sure that the original cassette sounded much better. this is just a shitty rip. and i bet there are song titles, we just dont know them. the bros never planned on having this be leaked. i highly doubt it holds up to their perfectionist standards.

Flac and wav will rue the whirl.

But I have a different idea. INFINATE QUALITY!
I just have no idea how to pull it off. It had something to do with instruments though.
