I've got four paintball guns if you'll count that.. I'm quite proud of my Tippman A-5.. Making it out to be sort of a semi auto assault rifle.. Retractable stock (spec ops style) and a 16 inch big daddy teardrop barrel, the cO2 line is modded so i can just keep the cO2 at my belt instead of the back of the gun making it bulky/heavy.. Still have yet to buy a shroud with a decent place to mount a red dot.. I've also over time acquired a limited edition spyder, a tippmann pro carbine (fucking amazing gun) and a couple shitty guns from my early days..

Was a bit amazed when I saw this topic as it doesn't match with the image I have of you. I guess it's because weapons are illegal here and I only see 1 purpose for a weapon, which is killing. Americans must have a totally different perception regarding weapons, right? I don't mean to generalize as there are also people here who have a gun for protection/hunting, but as far as I'm aware those are very rare. Given this topic, the replies and what I already knew about the weapon law, it seems like it's normal to have a gun in the USA. Which is a disgrace in my opinion.

To answer the question: No, I'm not a gun owner

as far as personal safety goes, my feelings on violence make it kind of a moot point. when people ask me, if i'm nonviolent or if self defense is morally permissable, i say, look, that whole conversation is bunk. it's nonsense. morally permissible has nothing to do with it; when threatened, people will defend themselves. i am nonviolent, i hate violence of any kind. i don't think it's ever "okay" to be violent, in any situation violence is still repugnant. you're just stacking repugnance on repugnance in a self-defense situation - there is no moral victor, only a major loser and a very unfortunate lesser loser who had little other choice. but i will be violent if someone jumps me and i react quickly. that's an instinct, it's a statement of probability - like "if you kick me in the nads, i will double over". so if i owned a gun, i would only be using it to defend myself from a violent attack, and my use of it would be impulsive and instinctual - not something i "agree" with or think is "okay". so even if i WASN'T making a huge mistake in using my gun, and it was perfectly "justified" (something i do not believe in), and it was some guy trying to kill me on the street, and i gunned him down first, i would still be living in a terrible world of regrets for having shot someone dead. god help me i have no stomach for harming other people beyond using words, even if they want to harm me. it's how i've always been. so no, i do not own a gun.

however someday in the future i may buy a gun purely for target practice, for the fun of simply firing a gun at cans (i have no sympathy for cans). but no, not for self defense, or to overthrow the government.

I'm with Ae on this one. Firearms are 100% illegal here and even if they weren't I can't imagine ever wanting to own one. I'm not judging, just saying..

I remember visiting the Cu Chi tunnels in Vietnam. At the end of the tour you could pay a dollar a bullet and fire an AK47, M16, etc, etc. The first time I heard the AK fired my blood just ran cold. Scared the living crap outta me. Any macho, male, Rambo gun hard-on I might have had vanished in a second. You can keep them to yourselves thank you very much.

I kinda figured this thread might go political - esp with so many across the pond here.

For me, gun ownership falls under the heading of 'being prepared'. It's not that I lust for blood or hope for action - rather I feel that, if anything, the world is becoming more violent - and that good people just need to be prepared for any eventuality.

If you really look at it, there has been an inverse relationship between human 'progress' and our relative civilization - brutality on the scale of, say, World War II, was impossible to us centuries ago. Our technology (and enlightenment) facilitated it and made it possible on an unbelievable scale.

So I'm a bit puzzled when people argue that we have no need for weapons and that we have risen above such things. We haven't. And frankly I don't share the faith that some people have in our law enforcement agencies.

Hence, when it comes to defending myself and my family, no amount of idealism will save us. We have to do what the human family has always done - defend ourselves.

Every person who owns a gun for their own protection, is part of the chain reaction and a potentional murderer.
