there is a theory in certain quarters that when you sleep your consciousness drifts off,it can drift into the future which is the real reason behind deja vu,in other words you have already been there, when you wake up before your consciousness has returned you experience sleep paralysis as though there is someone in the room with you

it goes back to old hag syndrome or incubus...

my bro had it for a long time, scared him no end

a lad i know has a hint of parasomnia. during one episode he saw a nun hanging by the throat on the back of his bedroom door. grim.

kinda funny
re-read this all yesterday and this morning when i was going to bed,
started hearing kids laughing in my left ear, real as anything. just laughing, getting louder and louder, then i realised i couldnt move. obviously i knew what it was, but my instinct was stil to try and fail to say "help" for some reason.
i wish i had thought about it a bit more though because you can dream in a conscious state if you focus during sleep paralysis.

That really is an interesting approach. Maybe a bit to far-fetched, but perhaps..

just a theory but it makes more sense than most others, ties in with astral projection

no experience of sleep paralysis, just read up on it

astral projection *scratches head*... what does it mean exactly? Like, what do you do practically when you use astral projection? It sounds a bit abstract to me..
I recognize the defensive / offensive thing. I have found comparable ways to make that evilness (whether it's real or imagined) leave my room (or dream) at once. Thats why it doesnt frighten me as much anymore.
And about deja vu.. Yah it sure is an interesting approach. It is an interesting subject in itself.
To me it happened maybe once or twice that i could literally remember something that was happening during the day from a dream of some nights before. But it felt different from that deja vu feeling, as the latter is way more vague (more based on a familiar scent or atmosphere rather than an actual happening) and also, i only get deja vu's when i'm tired .. Not sure though whether one can draw any conclusions from that fact.
What i do know is that some people (obviously the more intuitive ones) are just more receptive for (or is it 'receptive to'?) these things than others. But im puzzled about what can be explained purely psychology or neurologically and what not. Earthbound that screaming thing still gets me wondering what that could be. Could it be 'just' a terribly horrifying dream? But wasnt it your ear still felt somewhat 'deafened' when you awoke?

I've also noticed that more "intuitive" or, dare I say, "intelligent" people are more susceptible to things like sleep paralysis, astral projection experiences, etc.

John fonda et al., I am not sure what to think of Astral Projection (AP) either. I would think it was complete hogwash had I not directly experienced it once in my life. There are two schools of thought on the matter. One says that during AP your etheric body actually leaves your body in real time and space. The other says that AP is simply a glorified form of lucid dreaming. There are two books which are REALLY interesting: Robert Monroe's "Journeys Out of the Body". The other is Robert Bruce's "Astral Dynamics". Both of these books shed light on the subject from different angles.

which one of the two do you think is explaining it right? It's interesting you've experienced it yourself. What did you experience exactly?
Sorry about this interrogation haha you see this stuff really interests me.

This thread has made me hate sleep even more than I already do. I've never experienced sleep paralysis. It'd never even heard of it.

I'm staying awake forever. (I wish. Longest I ever made it was 3 days)

I have this once a weak. Sometimes 4 times in one night.. At first it was a bit creeping me out because it felt like something took control of my head and i was just laying there paralyzed.
It begon like a year ago, but I dont see it as that big of a deal for me.

I'm not really sure if I have some condition or if its just the way I sleep, but every night my heart beats extremely quick, and I always wake up without being able to breathe. I don't usually have nightmares just really fucked up dreams that include people that I know personally. I do sleepwalk though, two nights ago in fact I woke up at I think it was like 2 AM, walked into the kitchen, and poured myself a glass of milk (1% to be exact), woke up as I took a sip, stood there for a minute trying to grasp where I was - there were orange 'Christmas' lights on too so that made it even more confusing, a dimly lit orange kitchen, standing there in my boxers, drinking a glass of 1%. Some nights I just wake up and go outside just to look at the sky, like I feel the need to see it and make sure it didn't go anywhere while I was sleeping..

As far as paralysis goes, I don't recall ever experiencing it. The closest thing I would say is when I wake up some nights and think something is in my bed or loose in my bedroom so i jump out of bed throw my sheets around and all of a sudden realize there is no tarantula crawling in my bed and i go back to sleep.

Anyone else sleepwalk? I find it interesting...

A long time ago, when I was still living at my parents (that's almost 8 years ago now), I sleep walked occasionally. After waking up, it always felt like someone else was controlling me. That always freaked me out. Sometimes I didn't even noticed sleepwalking, but I could tell the next morning 'cause of minor injuries, like cuts or bruises.
There is one time I remember like it was yesterday, I can still vividly feel the confusion.
I know that I was dreaming about my parents bedroom. I was somehow looking for there bed. As a kid I could somtimes sleep in my parents bed untill they went to bed themselves. In my dream I had the feeling that I was near their bed, and that I should sleep there. But this sleepwalking happend when I was about 16 years old I guess. So it's strange in itself I was looking for my parents bed..
I know that during my sleepwalking I was more and more waking up, but also more and more confused. It was like there was a fog inside my brain which stopped connecting to understanding that I was doing something that didn't make sense at all. At last (it felt like an eternity) my clouded head got a bit clear. I found myself in my own room, just a few inches away from my own bed. I stepped into bed and fell asleep right away. The next morning I found myself lying in a bed with blood stains. Apparently, during my sleepwalking I cut myself several times in my arm, and I didn't even noticed it during my sleepwalking.. How weird is that?

Well that was years ago. I think that was the last time sleepwalking did occur..

Sounds pretty frightening man, the whole ending up with blood on your sheets. Better than someone else's blood though that would be terrifying all together =P

Oh and a question, when you quoted me, why is there an 's' after sleepwalk? In my original post I said sleepwalk not sleepwalks.. did you change that?

I'm entirely confused.

I lean toward the second (Robert Monroe's) view: that it's probably all just "in your head". I don't tend to see much evidence for the existence of some "hyperdimensional astral plane", no matter how real it may seem while you are dreaming (or on psychedelic drugs). There just isn't much, if any, correlative evidence to support the idea. I don't think anyone could disagree with the fact that the human mind is powerful beyond all comprehension, and I think it's more likely that the human mind could conjure up these experiences than that they are actually taking place on another dimension. I could be wrong though.

My experience was short, but it seemed real to me. I had been reading up on astral projection in my free time (mostly because I went to a college in the middle of nowhere and was bored!). I also had a friend there who had researched lucid dreaming a lot. Anyway, I was lying on my bed one afternoon after class, sort of "meditating" and focusing energy into a point about 8 feet above me. I tried to imagine "pulling" myself out of my body with my "astral" hands. After about 15 minutes of lying there with my eyes closed, my head began buzzing with energy and I sort of suddenly found myself sitting up out of my body. I climbed off my bed, walked across my dorm room, and got to my door. I grabbed the handle, and then I made the "mistake" that these people talk about: I turned around to look at my body, at which time I was "sucked" back in, instantaneously. I opened my eyes and realized I'd just had an experience of "astral projection".

Oh, and it's "receptive to". :)

Funny story: I have an uncle who grew up in an old fire station that had been converted into a house. Being of this nature, the house had a hole in the second floor, and a pole going down through it. In the "olden" days, firefighters would jump out of bed at the sound of an alarm and grab the pole to slide quickly down to the first floor. Since my uncle's family were not firefighters (they were just a normal family), they used the hole as a laundry chute. Anyway, my uncle had a younger brother, Mike, who sleepwalked on occasion. One night, Mike, fast asleep, got up out of bed, sleepwalked down the hallway to the "laundry chute", and urinated down it, soaking the family's laundry. Guess you gotta go when you gotta go :D

Yeah, the bizarre thing was, that it didn't frightenend me at all in the morning. It just felt like a logical result of the sleepwalking.

And about that 's'.. Well maybe, I was sleepwalking during typing my post yesterday, maybe that explains the 's' :o ..

Omg, thats too funny :D. I guess converting it into a laundry chute wasn't a good idea after all.

I've had it just about all my life, as well. At best, it's a mildly uncomfortable experience, at worse it's a nightmare. If I'm having a bad one it is usually about either feeling trapped (in a nether state, unable to move) or feeling like I can't breathe. I would have it alot of times as a kid when my mom was getting me up for school. I didn't really know what it was until I was a teenager.

Had it a few times, but its nothing often. I had one time where I felt like I wasnt asleep anymore, opened up my eyes but couldnt do anything. I saw this weird man standing at the end of my bed, staring at me and making a terrible loud and high noise, and just standing there still watching me. I then tried to scream so my parents would get in my room and like wake me up or something. The noise the man makes gets harder and higher every second, and i still cant do anything. Then im like aware of the fact it isnt real, and try to like, teleport him away, focus my mind and sort of help myself without moving or talking.

Pretty weird shit, that 1 was the scariest i had tho.

Edit: When I have this, its usually a sunday. When I drink large amounts on a saturday, and im pretty darn hungover on the sunday, I tend to have it the night from sunday to monday.

Had this about 3 times, but only the waking up and not being able to move part. First time it scared the fuck out of me, but after a while i realised best was probably to wait. Fell asleep again and woke up perfectly normal.
Had this the weekend after i used xtc so that had me kinda worrying.
Second and third time it was like a bit of panic at first, but realising fast i've had it before. Not a nice feeling anyway.
