3 weeks early? yes!!

Listening to it now.. I expected something completely new as I watched an interview recently where they said that IDM isn't new anymore and that one needs to re-invent himself to keep it interesting. I need a couple of listens though to see if I like it or not. A few songs are very Plaid-ish, so to speak.

I'm going through it now. To be honest the first 2 tracks totally blew my mind. Perfect balance between typical plaid and 'new music'. I liked greedy baby a lot because it was more experimental. But on this one there's moments that take me back 10 to 15 years to the times that smokin pt was a fulltime job.

I like Eye bot (aaaa lot) , Craft Nine, Somnl, African woods and 'at last'... For me they passed. They still got it.

No, I loved it on first listen.

Listened to it for the first time in bed last night, room was completely dark and had a really good pair of headphones on. Must say that I liked it on the first listened, I was not blown away, but we'll see what a few more listens do.

Plaid just don't surprise me at all with their compositions. They are undoubtedly talented, but the way everything is so clean and precise turns me off.

Yup, it are nice songs but nothing more. I even have the idea some songs are from a previous era. There are a few awesome songs on it though but it seems like they stopped to evolve after Greedy Baby (except for their score music). Just as TTK said "it's just Plaid... again"

I too was a bit dissapointed with this, I was pretty excited after hearing the tracks previewed before it came out (Missing, Tender Hooks, 35 Summers) expecting them to be like teasers for things to come, as it turned out these were probably the best tracks on the album. It all sounds a bit clean cut and on the surface, which is fine...but I dunno, something is missng. It's not bad it's just average.

I feel the same, I like their older albums better. It's just not worth the wait, and me saying this, makes me sad. BoC ;(

I really like Plaid's sound (I don't mind that it's quite clean compared to a lot of other electronic stuff I'm into) but too many of the tracks lack any structure. I think that's something that Plaid have always been guilty of - the complexity and prettiness clouding the lack of structured tune - but it seems a bit more pronounced on Scintilli.

Thinking back, I felt much the same about Spokes but then grew to really love it, so early days yet.

To be honest it's really only BoC that I enjoy consistently. Plaid, Aphex, Ae... all of them blow hot and cold. Some of their stuff I love and some does nothing for me. Not wanting to sound fanboy-ish but there's nothing in the "official" BoC catalogue that I don't like to at least some degree. I guess that's why I came to this forum...

Yeah I got the exact same thing, with the big difference that the songs were complex and sounded very chaotic at the first few listens, but the structure of the songs made me wanted to listen to it again. It were all little stories with Marry (and the video) as a huge climax. The song build up extremely and after seeing the video with the Iraq war footage(can't find it anywhere online ) they used in their lifeshows it all made so much more sense to me. I clearly remember it got released at the time GTA Vice City multiplayer was "released". When I hear Even Spring I'm hovering all over Vice City again, which makes me all warm inside because it was an easygoing period in my life.

Listened to it today, and at the risk of starting to sound like Twoism's resident grumpy git, it actually made me angry.

If you start listening to it at 35 Summers, it's a great EP. But the 10 or so tracks that come before it? They're the problem.

It's not that they're filler. It's that they're pretty much all devoid of any kind of human articulation, or performance. Whole tracks with no sense of build or progression, that end suddenly when they've filled up enough space on the disk. Whole tracks with everything played dead on the beat at constant volume, because they've all been programmed at MIDI velocity 127 and just left there, as if "that'll do". It's fine having a drum beat that goes from 5/4 to god knows what else but if it's so far back in the mix and there's nothing in the music to telegraph it or work against it it might as well not be there at all.

Seriously, the first two thirds of this album approaches Orbital levels of can't-be-bothered and it bores your ears. Then 35 Summers comes along, actually sounds like it's been crafted with care and it sounds brilliant. Everything that follows, same. It's just everything up to that point is a complete waste of good ideas that COULD have been good tracks if they'd only made an effort on them.

Pretty much agree! I've hardly felt the desire to listen to the album all that much since I bought it, which says a lot really. I much preferred the Tekkonkinkreet soundtrack, I'd have been happier had they just released something like that as an official album...there's no doubt that the talent is there and those performances they did with the likes of the Gamelan orchestra were really good, but yeah there's not a lot 'o soul in many of these tracks. Still seeing them live on tuesday though, might be better in an audio/visual environment
