Like luminousdusk said, it shows they're still reflecting on their older work. Not only that, but Warp have evidently stepped up their sample clearance game for this one, which is something that's necessary should we ever get an archival box set of some kind.
I've always wondered what kind of work goes into sample clearance and why this one was particularly a bitch to clear. Did they not care about doing it until now or was Edgar Froese not willing to let them sample it? I've noticed he's dead now (sad to hear actually since he is a pioneer in electronic music) but he wasn't when the track first came out, so did that have a role to play with it?

A lot of questions honestly, and perhaps some of the answers would allow us to know what's going on with Boc lately. Our buddy MDG would come in handy.

Once an artist passes away all sort of liberties are taken with their art by their surviving kin who no longer have the artist to support them. Tupac, Micheal Jackson, and Prince all spring to mind, but I'm sure we could name a few more quite easily. What would J.R.R. Tolkien say about the Lord of the Rings trilogy? That isn't to say Warp did anything wrong. It is just more likely they got the rights much easier now than they could have back then. In the end, we have Vanilla Ice to blame for ruining it for the rest of us. Oh well. What could have been?

I mean he spoke to me in August about Christ.'s involvement with the band and clarified some things about it.

To quote the man himself about where he is: "I don't have a lot of time to keep looking in here these days unless something is flagged up and brought to my attention via email."

Honestly, I've felt bad about bothering him in the first place since he's so busy.

What did he say about his involvement?

This is all off-topic but I'm sure no one will mind. It's not like much else is happening here.

He said that Christ. was not actually a part of BOC during the early 90s and pursued a more techno oriented career while Mike and Marcus recorded their demos under the name Boards of Canada. (Funny he says "demos" since that was the era where Acid Memories, Play By Numbers and Hooper Bay were supposedly recorded, I guess that makes them demos?)

Christ. was actually part of one of the duos earlier bands prior to BOC and the biggest contribution he made to BOC was writing the melody for Melissa Juice.

This totally goes against my theorizing which put Christ. as a central figure of BOC during their lost years. You can generally cross off Christ. as a reason why their lost EPs aren't released.

Also apologies to MDG ahead of time if he doesn't want me saying this stuff.

Thanks for sharing. Interesting as it kind of contradicts(?) what we knew from the Matador Records Bio where Chris was a member of the band in 1989 and departing in early 1996. To fit MDG's narrative, maybe he was a member early on during the band's transition to "Boards of Canada" (at least by '89), veered away to do the techno thing early 90's, came back a bit to contribute, then called it quits in '96?

Well you can tell just by listening to his music that he was more of a techno guy than BoC were. Pylonesque almost sounds like a μ-Ziq album at times.

It also contradicts the Cosmic Crofter calling the lost EPs "not demos" unless MDG was talking about other recordings they made.

I have a feeling that there's an intern at Warp who get amusement out of having some poor sap (me in this case) report on their 'mysterious' behavior.

So we get an email about the shipment of the WARP sessions boxes and they have a photograph of the Boxsets next to a stack of boxes labeled "something else."

Well, I'm joining you guys this time and stating flat-out that I'm not falling for it. Valotonin was right that they are starting to become a parody of themselves with this "mysterious" behavior. I must admit it is also funny as hell and now I'm just reporting it to share my amusement.

My rational for new Boards of Canada is "I'll believe it when I see it" so unless Warp/the brothers themselves explicitly state that there will be new content, I won't get my hopes up.

Warp has a lot of artists, all of whom are much more active than BoC, so if they ever mention a new surprise it surely won't be anything related to them. BoC is important enough and rare enough that if they release the demos or do a live set it's probably going to be a MUCH bigger deal than that image or the "mystery DJs" gimmick.

Yep I learned my lesson with the "mystery djs" thing specifically and I'm really sharing it with you guys just to show that Warp are up to some kind of shenanigans.

Though I will say that it may be related to more Warp 30 festivities.

Something else... ?? Bastards. What could it be? Exclusive music? A new album? A collection of old tunes?

The other releases are worth checking out for anyone who hasn't yet. Seefeel, Aphex, Plaid and LFO all very interesting for people with an interest in that period. Contains stuff that's new to me at least (even though most of it is probably scattered around the net).
