I record sounds from the movie shrek and I decompose them and re arrange them in a 707 drum machine.

I used to do that. Now it's Shrek 2 with an 808 machine.

- Cassette recorder on this Sony stereo system (which records at an extremely slow speed)
- Tascam 414 4 track cassette recorder
- Marantz PMD 201 cassette recorder
- Electric and acoustic guitars
- Reason 5 (electronics)
- Logic Pro (real instruments)
- Garageband (looping)
- 4 head HIFI VCR for mastering

- Akai MPK Mini (main)
- Akai MPC Renaissance
- MXL V67G (vocals/guitars)
- Various dynamic microphones

All of my recordings are done on either my Tascam MF-P01 four-track cassette recorder (for finished-ish recordings) or my Radioshack shoebox cassette recorder (for sketches and one-take jam-things).

Microphones have always been a bit of a problem; I can't afford to buy good ones myself, so the only one of my own that I have is a cheap Radioshack vocal mic which is horrible for recording. Occasionally, though, I'll borrow a better mic from one of various friends, so if I have one of those at the time recording I'll usually use that.

With regards to instruments, I have a Yamaha acoustic guitar (only recorded when I have a good mic or can get some other recording device set up in such a way that it sounds good), a black Fender Squier electric guitar, a white Fender Squier electric bass guitar, two keyboards (One Yamaha and one ten-or-so-year-old Casio) and a number of effects-pedals. Specifically:

Distortion
Caroline Guitar Co. Olympia Fuzz
Roland/Boss MT-2 Metal Zone
Chorus
Roland/Boss CH-1 somethingorother
Some weird analog pedal that sounds absolutely terrible
Reverb
Electro-Harmonix Holy Grail Reverb (again, sounds terrible)
Delay
Electroharmonix Carbon Copy Analog Delay (one of the best purchases I've ever made)

Everything goes out to either a Roland/Boss Micro Cube guitar amp or a Roland/boss Bass Cube (?) bass amp, depending on the instrument being played, usually by way of my four-track cassette recorder.

edit: I forgot to mention that once material has been recorded to cassette, it is generally transferred to my laptop, which is running the Linux-based operating system CrunchBang and edited using Audacity. Audacity under Linux-based systems has many plugins available that are not usable under Windows. I had 156 extra plugins installed at last count.

And this is why you're amazing.

I use Logic Pro to compose and do simple mixing of the musical arrangements. I'll use Logic Virtual instruments to get a basic track down, then replace most of them with other stuff for final versions later.

Then, I take it into Pro Tools for mixing/editing, instrument/vocal tracking.

I'm a big fan of WAVES plugins, and really like the Pro Tools standard plug ins as well..I don't know why people shun them. They're basic, but they can get the job done.

I use M-Audio Xponent for DJing
MPD18 for percussion, and just got a MicroKorg I'm trying to figure out.

An M-Audio M Box for an interface..which SUCKS. Can anyone recommend something else? Then, a Berhinger mixer to get the sound out of the box and into the M-Audio speakers (which are quite nice, but lack low end. I'd like some KRKs).

logic pro for tracking most of the time and sometimes effects

a boss drum machine

a kaoss pad

an acoustic guitar, a fender tele electric, a fender p bass

me banging on stuff in my garage/house

and various pedals i use occasionally.

and marijuana, psychedelics, good music, going outside, having campfires, hanging out with interesting people are all important tools mixed into the process in some way or another.

I use a Tascam US-144MKII, and I'm really impressed with it. They may have a newer one with Firewire or USB3 or soemthing, haven't checked.

On PC, Cubase 5 with my Tascam US-1641. Also use Audition 3.0 (my fave release of it) simply for quick waveform editing. Thinking about adding Reaper into the mix, very straightforward editor.

On Mac, Pro Tools 10 with an Avid Mbox Pro 3rd Gen. Ableton Live 8. M-Audio Axiom25 MIDI controller w/8 drum pads. I have an M-Audio Oxygen8 v2 that I rarely use anymore as well. I've kinda drifted from PC to Mac in the last year...blame Pro Tools, lol. Also, my Tascam isn't compatible with Mountain Lion OR Pro Tools, so yeah.

I have various dynamic mics, one AKG condenser..Fender Strat, Gretsch Electromatic, random acoustics, Roland HP-101 electric piano, Yamaha Musicstation PSS-480 keyboard..a few portable reel to reels for bouncing to and fro from digital. Various small percussion instruments. Currently working on fixing my Sony TC-366 R2R to use as a tape delay..gotta buy a tape head demagnetizer lol

EDIT: Forgot - my monitors are a pair of Fostex 6301B's that were given to me by a friend, and they have served me well the past few years. Proof that small/personal monitors can still sound awesome! And my trusty headphones are a nicely worn pair of Sennheiser HD 215's..soon to get HD 280's.
