That xxxxxx 12" Vinyl is back on ebay

Post by GH »

http://pitchfork.com/news/50759-that-bo ... p-on-ebay/

The last winner was a non-payer and it's got a buy-it-now price of $5,700
http://www.ebay.com/itm/boards-of-canad ... 1216253203?

Most importantly, there's still only one tiny dent in one corner of the sleeve.

That guy's dreaming if he thinks he's going to get anything like that amount for it. Yeah, it's phenominally rare and we'd all love to have it but not by mortgaging a kidney. Such a shame it didn't get picked up by someone who was a real fan and would've treasured it.

To be honest I'd probably be selling it as well. I don't think stumbling upon something like that at pretty much random and keeping it just by principle makes you any more of a "real fan".

i wouldn't just keep it because I'm a "true fan" but its just the fact that Boards of Canada hid keys around the world that held access to the preview to their new work... Its not everyday the brothers just interact with their fans like that... Like a golden ticket... i would never sell mine if i had found one.

It occurs to me that maybe someone drove up the price for a laugh and had no intention of paying :lol:

I can understand it going for hundreds maybe, but thousands? :?

There is something fishy about this new listing.

original listing:
* http://pitchfork.com/news/50543-boards- ... 2-on-ebay/
* http://www.ebay.com/itm/Boards-of-Canad ... 1100905866

Item location:New York, New York, United States
Seller: rchaparro154 (1 )
Status: item sold 5700 USD

new listing:
* http://pitchfork.com/news/50759-that-bo ... p-on-ebay/
* http://www.ebay.com/itm/boards-of-canad ... 1216253203?

Item location: Nashville, Tennessee, United States
Seller: venimdenim1
Status: unsold

----

The item is definitely in someone else's hands (see the non-matching item location / seller in both listings) so it has to be a bogus story we're being tipped. I reckon the one who bought it for 5700 USD is coping with buyer's remorse and likes to resell it. Perhaps he didn't know there are 6 vinyl out there and might think his purchase isn't worth so much money after all.

I also recall someone posting on the bocpages facebook page he bought the XXXXXX record for "an ungodly amount". That person is located in Nashville, weird coincidence?

I couldn't put a price on such a rare collectors item as the record.

But then that doesn't mean I'd pay $5000 for it. I could understand if the guy had paid such a ludicrous amount, which likely no one else was willing to come close to, only to realise that the retail value was $20 and the intrinsic value even less, and is having some trouble coming to terms with his rash decision. As awesome as it is and as much as I'd would treasure it if I were to own one, the fact is that it's only a 20-second piece of non-music on vinyl.

jeez i'd most definitely would not like to be the one that paid that much for this.

i can see this sitting there for the next 29 days then price reduced again and again
till it sells again.

impulse buys :?

Yup, that jumped at me yesterday when I was checking the listing, the location, the wording, the pictures, everything is just completely redone. I have a feeling too that this is the buyer that is trying to recoup on the buy done a week ago, the whole story of "winner backed out" makes no sense, plus as an eBay seller since 1998, you can always offer the second highest bidder, then the third etc. so this has all the signs of being a re-sell. Guess his wife found out and wasn't too happy 'bout it. ;)

Most expensive vinyl ever sold (possibly)

John Lennon and Yoko Ono - 'Double Fantasy' $400,000. Running time 45 mins (listed times vary)

$148 per second

Boards of Canada - 'Promo Vinyl' $5,700. Running time 40 secs (I think)

$142 per second

Now, I know this valuation discounts context entirely, but I still think its an interesting exercise for anyone who might be considering buying this.

TL;DR
If sold, BOC will have recorded the second most valuable noises in the history of this planet.

Its also worth noting that The John Lennon Yoko Ono album is a freak. No other recording has ever come close to that.

If you compare the BOC vinyl with the rest of the top ten, then the BOC is more valuable per second by multiple multiplications of many multiples.

Eh, I could see it selling for no more than a few hundred bucks to a sane person. It's not that desirable to me IMO. I would much rather have the Blue Geogaddi Test Pressing that sold for $500.00 on Discogs a bit ago.

If that's true..what kind of fool would bid $5700 and not pay?! Oh wait, this is the internet.... :lol:

I can't understand the logic of non-payers. Do they think it's funny to bid a ridiculous amount then hide, causing unnecessary disappointment and anguish for the seller?! Do they make an impulse purchase then later struggle to come to terms with the price they've put forward, so back out? It's such bad conduct...

As pointed out above in the thread, there's a suspicion that it's not a case of non-paying bidder, the seller information is completely different. I.e. it was sold, and the buyer is hoping to recoup on it.

That's what you get for having that much money to spare. You lose it.
Or maybe he's being chased by the loan-sharks he got it from :lol:

There's definitely something not quite right about this from the word go in my opinion.

The supposed original finder initially listed this record on Discogs for $5000 before being put on ebay instead with a reserve, with the seller claiming on here that he just wanted to cover the postage and packing. Yet the reserve still wasn't met after several hundred dollars.

Pitchfork get in on the act, and promote the sale of this thing.

it sells for $5,700.

Then Pitchfork point out that it's up on ebay again, without noticing it's a different seller? This time it's free shipping :/

I dunno. There's something not quite right in general...and I thought thbere was supposed to be more than 2 of these floating around

I recall the person who originally bought the record at Other Music in NY, has been present on this forum?

I'm sure they could clarify what the situation is - i-e if the record was in fact paid for and is now being re-sold on by the winner, of if this is an alternate listing (for whatever reason) having not been sold originally - if they are able to.

Or it was a scam and they didn't even have the record. Who knows, it does seem odd though.

Yet another mystery to add to the BoC mythology :lol:
